Got the new motor in and running great. I installed a cheap set of sunpro gauges - Volt, temp, oil pressure? Running around last night and the engine temp was around 190. Checked the block temp with an IR gun and got 180. Are these temps normal?

Rick,

That seems like a quick turnaround. Congratulations.

Those temps sound great to me.

How did you do the R&R? Bit by Bit, or All in One? Photos?

I'm sure lots of folks, now and in the future, would like to hear
details of the job.

Rick,
What thermostat do you have in the coach? It appears to be a 190
which is ok, many have run the 180 thermostat. The temp of the
coolant indicated by the sender and the surface temp of the block will
always vary depending on where you are taking the surface temp, they
will almost never be the same. 190 is a great temp for the coolant
temp.

Good Going Rick

Yes, but one of the places you should check next time you have the engine hot is the thermostat housing. You do not say where you picked to check the block temperature. The lower front of a block will be close to the same as the radiator outlet.

Compare the coolant in/out temperatures to make the most sense of what is going on.

Engine running sitting in the driveway is not the acid test. At speed with
the normal loads that you carry is the real test. The temps that you
reported sound pretty normal to me, but that can change when you are flowing
a lot more air/fuel mix through the engine with a load on it.
There is some cockeyed logic to the statement that more gages means that
much more stuff to worry about. A lot to be said for idiot lights. They tell
you when something is seriously out of whack, and don't continously nag you.
Come to think of it, that is kinda what a guy should be thankful for if his

Just out of interest, what are you seeing for oil pressure at idle?

Getting about 30 pounds of oil pressure at idle using the purple break in oil. Should be a little higher with regular oil. I did the engine out in two days and in in three. Running down the road today with an outside temp of 84 degrees, I am running at near 200 degrees. I am going to say good to go unless anyone thinks this is too hot... My engine builder says that it will run hot for a while because the tolerances are tight.

Nothing wrong with those numbers. My coach also wanders in temperature
between 180 and 200, at which time the fan clutch kicks in and it
immediately drops back down to 180. My cooling system is tip-top, but the
engine is a 100K senior, and it's tolerances are surely not tight. My oil
pressure when the engine is really warmed up on a hot day (and this takes a
while) is 18-20 at idle and 35 at highway cruise. When the oil is not fully
warmed up, it's much higher. But at its lowest it significantlty exceeds my
minimum requirement of 10 psi per 1000 rpms.

Book says hot idle oil pressure is OK at 5psi, and hot running at 35 psi. If
you are better than that, probably OK. What you should pay attention to is a
drastic change in pressure running at steady speed with the engine fully
warmed up.
