The rear wheel on the Revocn is stuck. I noticed this tendancy last time the thing was running, it would occasionaly stick when moved on dirt but it would break loose if i went backwards and/or got in on asphalt.

I figured it was a brake issue that I would get back to.

But now I'd like to tow it across the yard and it's absolutely STUCK.

I got the wheel off, the emergency brake cable is slack. I've pound on the drum with a hammer but it ain't moving.

What is the recommended course of action?

Thanks

Short term: Insert two flat blade screwdrivers (brake adjuster toll set preferred) to back off the star wheel.

Long term (immediately after that): Check for two things:

1) Are the primary/secondary aka leading/trailing shoes reversed? Compare the amount of lining "wrap" with the other brakes if you don't have the GMC manual. Don't forget that one side is mirrored, and don't be fooled by the parking brake cable position.

2) Are the star wheels installed backwards? One side is right hand thread, the other is left hand thread. On mine, there were 3 of one and one of the other!

I'm sorry, i try to avoid revcon specific questions here, but i don't think i have star wheels.

Do you mean the brake adjusters like on the VW Beetle?

I have nothing like that.

I'm looking for tips on breaking it loose- heat? brute force?

Dave, pry off the rubber oval shaped plug on the backing plate, and back off
the adjuster. If you have self adjusting brakes, you will need to put
something long and skinny through the slot at the same time you have the
brake adjusting tool in there to press and hold the starwheel ratchet pawl
away for the starwheel while you move the starwheel. Takes both hands and a
good vocabulary.<Grin>

Dave, does the Revcon have Lockheed drum brakes like the GMC or Bendix like
early fords used that had a snail cam adjustment with a locknut on the
outside of the backing plate. If that is what the Revcon has, spray the
locknut with kroil, then loosen it and turn the snail cam to back off the
linings from the drum. If it has something other than that, like Girling, I
know nothing.

On the bottom, on the inside there is a slot, about 1.25"

I can't make out whatss's behind it but it's not a start wheel.

On the top there is a small nut, 3/8ths? I loosened it but it does not appear to have anything to do with loosining the brakes.

I'll try the Revcon forum but they take DAYS to come up with a meaningful answer.

Thanks

Remove the drum on the good side and you can see how the adjuster system works. Then use that information to remove the drum on the stuck side.

Excellent advice.

I got it off but I never did figure it out. It does have a star whee but the teeth are such that i don't think i could have backed it off.

I'm not sure where the pressure was coming from. I just kept pounding and prying but it fought me all the way. The E-brake was snug but not tight.

The brakes will get redone and I'll never know.

Thanks for all the input.

If the self adjusters stop working, and as the shoes wear, the piston in the wheel cylinder can end up moving farther out the cylinder and getting stuck in the rust there (and not retracting when you let your foot off the brake). Also, sometimes the flexible hose that connects the wheel cylinder to the steel line can slough off internally and form a one-way valve. Make sure you change the flexible lines when you get the brakes redone.
I was tempted to suggest a gear puller to get the drum off. It would have worked, but could cause some collateral damage and drive up the cost of repairs.
