Getting ready last night for a drive to myrtle beach this morning. On my trip to Bean Station, and my HOT drive to Zebs i kept smelling oil burning, as if it were dropping on something hot. My first notion was that the new valve cover gaskets hadnt seated correctly, so on Wednesday i snugged the bolts a little more and cleaned around both valve covers and down the road we went for a test... No oil from valve covers, but boy was the burning smell strong. Next assumption was maybe the oil pan bolts have worked loose, that sometimes happens on everything. 10:30 thursday night.. trip to start at 3am friday. i crawl under the GMC to snug up the oil pan bolts, none will turn.. as im following the volumn of oil to find where in hell its coming from what do i see protruding down?? My friggin oil dip stick! The shoulder on the flat portion of the dipstick had pulled the dipstick tube out of the block!. The dipstick driving the GMC kept adding oil because there was just a dab on the end of the stick where it was hitting the exterior of the oil pan.. Cleaned it up. pushed it back in the hole, new oil resistent rtv and a final shove to seat everything. filed the shoulders off the dip stick, cleaned the bulk of the oil off the hot parts of the engine and exhaust and still on the road by 330. no oil smell in 5 hours of driving.....

a PO had replaced my dipstick tube with a length of copper tubing, and the combination of the shoulder on the flat of the dipstick, and the red rtv they used to seal it being saturated with oil caused a very interesting problem .

plus lost another hubcap somewhere on i-20 after i left the Camden SC rest area. I have an idea where. there is a bridge that sits about 4 inches above the road. im pretty sure thats the culprit, plus the tire shop put weights on the outside of my wheels. the fronts have been corrected, going to correct the rears next week..

A friend and local former GMC'er, used to hammer the hubcaps on with a short chunk of wooden 1x2 and a hammer. He would go around the lip and make sure they where seated. The edges of his caps got quite "rippled" but the caps stayed on!

The point is, what ever your hub caps... ensure they are seated well.

We're at the state park campground at Myrtle Beach. It's a great campground
and the beach is lacking anything you encounter on the typical public
beaches I've been to recently. Let's see -- no one selling T-shirts,
parasailing, boat rides, or jewelry. Just water, waves, sun, and sand. Next
week we head to Boone and Blowing Rock and a ride on the Tweetsie.

Hey Byron, i havent ridde the tweetsie since i was about 6!! would be nice to go again. Im north of you this weekend at Briarcliffe rv resort. Youd like it here, however i enjoy the excitement of the Ocean Lakes circus. By 9 each night everyone is locked in, no laughter, kids playing or anything..

Also wanted to mention im trying out a new motorhome club, and i can say they arent near the same caliber of people as my Dixilander buddies and the folks here on the GMCnet. They have money and big coaches that our little GMCs could use as a garage, but if you dont have a cool personality whats the use of even leaving the house? So cheers for the GMC family once again!!

And Cheers for FOUND hubcaps.

Interesting.

There's a brown GMC with original hubcaps in the MB State Park campground
just a few slots up from us.

The line to get in Ocean Lakes was awesome yesterday. Saturday isn't the day
to arrive. Also, an enormous amount of fifth wheelers around this place and
many, many more in storage for the Canadians who come in for the winter.

Glad you found your hubcaps.

At least on my old wheels, the wheel covers had to be installed tucked under the wheel weights first. If you started anywhere else, the covers would not seat properly, over top of the weights. Anyway that is the logical reason your covers are coming off, as the overpaid tire jocky did it wrong. Fortunately I now have and love the new Eagles. Discount Tire here in Michigan would not hear of installing balancing beads, so I settled for sticky weights.

Michael,

Speaking of Eagles, are your wheels marked "MAX Pressure 60 PSI? What
pressure are you running?

Thanks,

Mine say that. As I do not run any of the hub covers, you can read it ... right there! Next to the lug nuts.

I was told (can not remember by who..) that that is the max pressure that should be used to SEAT the tire bead.

I run about 65 in my tires. I probably do not need that much on the rears of my 23 foot coach.

Thank Mike,

I hear the recommended inflation is 65 as a starting point. Thought I had
the only wheels marked 65PSI MAX.

Tom,

Tom I just checked Operators Manual X-7521a page 75 which shows the "Tire
Pressure Placard." I copied and pasted it below but since GMCnet emails are
Plain Text it doesn't come out as shown in the manual but I've corrected it
to show the same info.

GMC MOTORHOME
TIRE PRESSURES
FOR
8.75 x 16.5 LOAD RANGE D
FOR LOADS UP TO VEHICLE CAPACITY
PSI COLD
FRONT 60 REAR 60
FOR SUSTAINED SPEEDS IN
EXCESS OF 65 MPH INCREASE TIRE
PRESSURES 10 PSI COLD

I find this interesting; this tells you to run the pressure up to 70 PSI yet
the max pressure on a D Load Range tire is 65 psi.
