Prior to his death, Joe Mondello was working on bringing out a
Mondello-labeled oil that would have meet the requirements for the 455/403.

Or use Delo 400 @ 4.29 per qt http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/CHV0/40030.oap?pt=N0436&ppt=C0162 available in most weights and other vendors also. DO NOT USE Delo 400 LE it is NOT rated for our engines.

Valvoline VR1 20-50 which has high levels of zddp has online coupon offering $15 mail in rebate on purchase of 6 quart case of oil. This is oil touted by Jim Bounds. I use it.

I have seen Delo 400 by the gallon in the local O'Reilly store. I also purchase it by the gallon at independent NAPA stores in south eastern Texas. The company owned stores don't seem to be able to get it.

I've been using an additive that SteveF recommended from Schneider Cams in
San Diego. About 4 oz per oil change. Still ticking after 115,000 miles.

Subject: [GMCnet] ZDDP Additive Sources

G'day,

Here's some information on sources of ZDDP additives.

1) GM / Delco E.O.S.

Dosage: I can't find the dosage for a 5 quart oil change.

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm?singlepart=1&partnumber=EOS

GM PART # EOS 88862586
OUR PRICE: $12.17
Cost per Ounce: $0.76

http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance/809/88862586/10002/-1

GM Performance #809-88862586
Cam & Lifter Pre-Lube
16OZ $17.99 = $1.12 per ounce

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-88862586/

Price: $17.95
Cost per ounce: $1.12

2) Delco EOS

http://www.acdelco.com/html/pi_vehcare_lub.htm

Click on down arrow next to Select and highlight E.O.S. Assembly Lubricant.

Part 10-106
12371532
E.O.S. Assembly Lubricant (1 pint)

Is specially formulated as an engine assembly lubricant. Provides protection
against run-in wear and piston scuffing. Is not recommended for use as an
additive for engine oil.

2) ZDDPlus

Dosage: 1 four ounce bottle per 5-6 quart oil change.

http://www.davidnavone.com/zddplus.htm

Single 4oz Bottle of ZDDPlus $9.95 = $2.48 per ounce Five - 4oz Bottle of
ZDDPlus $47.50 = $2.37 per ounce

3) SFR-100

Dosage: 1 ounce per quart.

I bought a gallon of this stuff last year after I got the following
information from them:

QUESTION 1): Does SFR 100 contain ZDDP?
RESPONSE: Normal motor oil when it contained ZDDP averaged 300 ppm. SFR when
added at 3% or 1 ounce per quart of motor oil averages over 900 ppm. There
is over 30,000 ppm in SFR 100 concentrate.

QUESTION 2): How much SFR 100 should I add to 5 quarts of oil to get
1200-1400 PPM of ZDDP in oil that does not contain any ZDDP?
RESPONSE: I would add 1 1/2 ounces per quart or the recommended dosage for
first time use and 1 ounce per quart of motor oil with each and every oil
change.

QUESTION 3) Can I add too much SFR 100?
RESPONSE: You can use up to 10% or 3 ounces per quart. After that it is not
economical based on testing that we have run. You will get outstanding
results by using 1 1/2 ounces of SFR per quart of motor oil the first time,
and 1 ounce per quart of motor oil subsequent oil changes.

http://www.sfrcorp.com/product/sfr-100-petroleum-oil-fortifier

Size / SKU / Price
1 Quart Bottle / S34005 / $34.70 = $1.08 per ounce
1 Gallon Bottle with 1 oz. Pump / S34003 / $107.90 = $0.84 per ounce
5 Gallon Pail with 1 oz. Pump / S34002 / $467.00 =$0.72 per ounce

When I was commuting in diesel Jettas, I used Rotella synthetic.  As far as I know, only available at WalMart.  Go figure.

Or you could just use whatever oil you want and add a small, inexpensive, bottle of "ZDDP plus" to each oil change. Works for me and saves me the worry of being sure that I have the "right" oil.

All really smart guys do this.

Valvoline VR1 is dinosaur oil, or so I was told. It's also for high
performance engines. Since I don't race the GMC, I don't need to spend the
money though it does have the ZDDP blended in. Use a synthetic and add ZDDP.
Much cheaper that way. Spend the money you saved on something else for the
coach.

I hazard to guess that with 8000 GMC's on the road that 7500 people not on the net do just fine without any ZDDP additives at all. It still remains one of the most mis-understood issues that has no factual data to back it up (once a cam is worn in on a rebuilt engine.) For almost all of us it it is a waste of time and money. Sure we can argue that it's cheap insurance but I can say the same about any fluid we use.
