I am replacing an outer axle boot. I think I remember someone on this forum saying not to band the little end. Is this correct and why.

Thanks

I used a heater hose clamp on the little end. Works for me...6 years now. Just gotta be careful that you don't over-tighten. Just my relatively informed, off the cuff, back yard mecahnic, gut level, eyeball it up and guestimate, way of doing things....that's all...

Wayne, remember you are doing two things there, you are preventing a loss of
lubricant, and you are preventing abrasive dust and/or water from entering.
Just be sure that the small end is where it belongs on the axle, sometimes
on the convouluted boots that are quite stiff they will extend too far
towards the middle of the shaft. Proper size hose clamp will work on the
small end, but not the large end if you do not have a banding tool at your
disposal. If you just wanted to have one in your tool box, NAPA stores still
carried them the last time I looked. I think they cost around $27.00 if I
remember right.

I tried using a larger hose clamp on the big end and found that the screw portion of it hit... something ... don't remember what,,,I just looked and it won't clear the top nut on the ball joint, lower A frame. So I had to use a band. Double banding has been encouraged here, but mine have been single banded for 6 yrs with no problem. I think if you get the boot contact point on the axle squeaky clean, it has a better chance of staying and not slipping off. Just what I think...

Wayne,

I have seen it done both ways with the clamp on the axle and without. The first time I saw it left off it was by a long time GMCer at a work rally. Leaving it off lets the boot slide slightly after installation and allows it to find it's own natural position. Also leaving the clamp off prevents stress cracking of the boot near the clamp over time.

It is your choice. I forget if we clamped mine or not.

We carry the rachet band tightening tool and double wrap bands, let me know if
you need them.  Since we started in on using the double wrap bands, we have had
great success in keeping them on.  Also, you need a better boot than what most
local shops offer.
