Just had performance radiator drop off both the copper/brass and the aluminum/plastic version of the radiator to look at. For half the dough(and half the weight) I'm taking the aluminum/plastic one. The aluminum one also appears to have more fluid passages. Both have inlets, outlets, plumbing for trans, coolant, engine. Haven't pulled mine yet to confirm location of inlets/outlets
Anyone have part #s for upper/lower rad hoses for 455?

Sully,

I have never heard of a plastic / aluminum radiator for a GMC!

I have two aluminum radiators made by Griffen for Gene Dotson / Jim
Buchanan.

Could you provide more details about the one you got from Performance
Radiator.

Rob,
The plastic component would be the the top and bottom tanks and the core is
aluminium.

Performance part # 730 PAL for aluminum with plastic tank and 730CBR copper
and brass. list is about $300 and $700 respectively. Again, I have not
pulled mine to compare yet but it is listed for gmc/motorhome/7.4
liter/1977. Is a 455 a 7.4 liter???????????????
You can view a picture of the CBR one on the website
www.performanceradiator.com but there is no photo of the PAL

Sully,

Our GMC is NOT a P-30 chassis based unit. Whole different critter.
Including that the 455 is not a 7.4l. I'll lay you dollars to donuts
it ain't gonna fit.

I looked at it and the measurements are about 28 by 17 inches. My thinking it is about half the size of our aluminum one.
I was hoping it was the same. For that price I would have a spare.

I just sent a detailed note to them asking them if it fits the 1973-1978
GMC. Gave them all the info they need. After I get an answer I may call
the 800 number and chat with them.

I'll report back.

HOWEVER, since the GMC motorhome radiator is a cross flow radiator shouldn't the tanks be on the sides?

Unfortunately, the only "GMC motorhome" most have listed is a GMC BASED sob motorhome. Not ours.

I would be VERY surprised if this radiator fits. (Pleasantly surprised, but surprised.)

Ken H.
455 = 7.5l Close enough to 7.4l
Even if it requires some brackets to be fabricated to mount it, and different hoses to connect it, it is worth looking into.

look under my thread "bunch of loosly related questions". The pricing info is there. It does have the correct number of plumbing inlets/outlets but I HAVE NOT CONFIRMED LOCATION OF FLUID PORTS OR SIZE OF COOLANT NECKS. I would wait and see what Tom finds out as Ken H has brought up a very good point. "Our gmc is not a p-30 chassis and the 455 is not a 7.4L" I would say that his statement of incompatability is correct but Tom has appointed himself to do the research with Performance. I plan on waiting for his results.

Just opened the box of the copper brass one I have sitting here for return. It does not appear to have lines for the engine oil cooler. It has 3 ports in it, two look like trans lines which are on the right side of radiator (engine side). The Al one is at home. I am sure that performance does have acces to the direct replacement one if we can figure out a factory part number or another more mainstream application for the same radiator. Lets see what Tom digs up

Do not return the old radiator. It is one of a kind that can be
re-cored. The end caps that make up the radiator are "unobtainium".

Sully,

Been trading emails with Performance. First, they are great at responding.
I just sent them the re-core information from the parts exchange index.
We'll see what happens.

And yes, hang on to the old radiator. If you want to get it re-cored take
it to a commercial/truck radiator shop.

Stay tuned,
