I'm sure that JimK has them available. Like you, I found that most RV shops just have the Valterra valves these days.

Check to see what the white mounting ears look like on your tank when you're taking off the old valve. Mine were torn enough that I couldn't mount another Thetford and simply bolt it on like the original. I had to fabricate an adapter system to be able to use a Valterra valve - not a pleasant job to undertake.

Shan,

My 73 is an early model and had only a flexible hose from the drain valve -- later 73's had an abs pipe -- anyway, I used Thetford valve 08709 -- bought it from Cinnabar.

I understand that JimK also has valves.

Shan,

The valves used on '73 were stainless on the tank side, and those don't seem to be available at all. (JimK might just have them...) The only ones I was able to find were all plastic (later version). These are also about 1/4" thicker and the dump pipe will have to be adjusted to accommodate. Try JimK, JimB and Alex or others before you give up because that 1/4" also means you have to modify the transverse frame right behind the tank.

The outer side of the valve has a slip joint that the outlet pipe is glued into. The good part is that these glue joints can usually parted with a chisel and hammer - used carefully. I could not do this under the coach. I took the whole pipe down. Then cut out and replaced that first straight piece out of the valve. I could not find any ABS locally, so I used PVC.

The valve has four screws into the tank flange. If the coach was not winterized well, the threads can get pulled out of the plastic flange. With care, helicoils can be put in there - just don't drill too deeply!!.! This may be where your leak actually is.

Do Not use anything but stainless here. Some PO put steel in mine and the threads in the plastic were total loss.

In any case, you will have to plan to spend most of a day under the back of the coach. But the work is worth the effort.

Have a Good Time.

Matt

Well I know its the valve leaking because the leak is out the bayonet at the end not the valve tank joint. Additionally I can't seat the latch fully so I know its only about 80% closed. A plastic valve sounds good as those can't rust at all so it might be worth making the change over? I noticed Valterra makes an easy fix gate valve which twists on the bayonet essentually making a gate at the hose fitting this might be the best short term fix Smile

At least I know there hasn't been solid waste in my tank since the PO because the valve on my electra magic also leaks all the charge water into the tank. So I just dry dock it when I gotta drop cargo. Still though I'm not interested in taking a bath in blue formaldehyde and pee lol...

It has been my experience that black tanks, grey tanks, plastic valves &
plumbing are all made out of similar materials. When one becomes cracked and
brittle from age and exposure to sunlight, the others are not far behind it.
Unless you just take some perverse pleasure from laying under your GMC with
stuff dripping on your face, maybe the best course of action is to do it
once and do it right. Start at the tanks and replace it all and add a
mascerator while you are at it. Every one of these GMCs are different,
particularly the Transmodes that were sent to upfitters like Avion and
Coachman. The Jims and Duane Simmons can fix you up with replacements for
everything under there. It is for the most part all glue together plastic
materials that can be cut with ordinary hand tools. Not hard, just nasty.

If you want to see a real leak you should have been at the Dayton hamfest last Saturday. As the hamfest drawing announcer said on Sunday " Saturday was suppose to be the Day of the Rapture, instead it was the Day of the Rupture". Another volunteer guarding the barricades told me said the he now understands what it meant to be "knee deep in pooh".

The main sewer line for the Hara Arena ruptured in the middle of the parking lot. The parking lot is where the flea market is set up. There are a little over 4200 spaces with about 2500 of them occupied. I did not see the actual break as I was inside one of the buildings at the time but I noticed that there was yellow tape across ALL of the doors going to all of the restrooms. When I did go outside they had an area of about 20 or 25 spots cordoned off and a large vacuum truck sucking up sewage. That area was occupied earlier but everything and every one had been moved by the time I got there.

I heard two different stories.

1. The sewer line broke and there was sewage shooting 6 to 8 feet high.

2. The sewer line broke underneath a van parked in his flea spot and his van and several other vehicles plus all of their merchandise got a bath.

I do not know which was true but the event was the highlight of the day there.

I was told that the health department tried to close down the Hamfest but people would not leave. They did manage to shut down most of the food vendors. By Sunday the rupture was fixed and a new patch of asphalt covered up the hole.

You guys were worried about a little leak in a holding tank. How much sewage do you think 15,000 to 20,000 people generate.

All is well in Dayton.

I have a 12 volt electric gate here. The rod pulled out of the gate a couple of years back, leaving the coach in need of an enama (sp). I was on the Colorado River in California. I had lots of onlookers from the park as I worked on it. Once I was able to get the crowbar where I needed it, I told folks that things were about to "roll". You should have seen 5 guys run. Tank was full and things got interesting in a hurry. One reason I am glad I have my maserator off set and a 3 inch pipe, with another valve and cap, coming straight out. Direct "line of sight" into the tank.

Agreed.

You might be able to salvage the tank(s), but you might as well replace everything else under there. I would go with normal "off the shelf items" that you can pick up almost anywhere.

IF you need a tank, you'll need to go to one of our fine vendors... you'll get one that fits.

I am just finishing up my first macerator install. I think new pipes are MUCH nicer to work with... not that expensive either. I had to buy some of the parts a few times... that glue sets up fast! Laughing

@James, if I could afford to do all that I would, but right not its the green stuff leaking up front, rather than the blue stuff out back. A new AL radiator is going to be my next big purchase, so I just need a quick fix for now.

Hahaha I knew there was a reason I fit in here. My remark to Ken was a bit tounge in cheek since I can spin a yarn about poopie with the best of'em lol. I quite frequently gross my girlfriend out. Hehe I think its a guy thing...

I did get the leak stopped. I bought a Valterra bayo cap and universal adapter. I then went to home depot and got a pvc ball valve and some brass fittings and I now have a nice liquids only dump valve. Since I don't yet have a Mascerator I dry dock to get rid of poopie and it gives a second use for those plastic Tshirt bags from the store Smile
