Now that you're GMCers, you REALLY need to join the Dixielanders GMC
club. Lots of information at http://www.gmcdixielanders.org/,
including the membership application and information on the July 14-16
rally at Noccalula Falls Campground in Gadsden, AL. You're just a
little too late for the annual work rally at Bean Station, TN, but you
definitely want to plan now to attend that next May.
With about 15 GMCers in GA now, we could almost start our own chapter! :-)
Promoting Dixielanders is not to minimize the importance of also
joining GMC Motorhomes International, GMC Eastern States, or any of
the others. :-)

Well, no, I meant to say ACTIVE GMCers whom I know -- off hand. Are
there really that many in the Registry? Sure wish we could get all of
them to join our activities. :-)

I suspect many are like me... they have the coach for a specific purpose. Unfortunately - or fortunately from my point iof view, the activity takes up weekends. (One of my dogs gets to go to shows now and again). So, I end up trading on the good graces of the folks to whom RVing is in and of itself an end rather than a means to an end. Have a look:

And scroll down to Champion Rebel Ridge Southern Cross, who answers to 'Duke' (sometimes), and you'll see what I do for fun. It takes something the size of the GMC to carry more than one of these guys, I currently have three. We have to take them, or Paula has to stay home and dogsit.

I'm still trying to figure out the different clubs too. Lots of hierarchies and overlaps and varying focuses...hard to know who's who.
We're bad candidates for Dixielanders since we're moving out of the Southeast in a couple months. We're probably bad candidates for all social clubs -- two young kids and a dog are not everyones' favorite neighbors at rallies. I haven't taken the time to figure out what the differences are between Eastern, Western, and International (aside from the obvious), and FMCA confuses me utterly.
But I'm a sponge for technical information, so I'd sign up with anyone who is working to compile archives of referenceable stuff that might be useful down the road.
There's a ton of tech stuff out there. The biggest challenge for me is keeping track of where to find it all. The guide that Gary Bovee put together is great for collecting the sources, but obviously can't index each of the topics at those sources. Some of the info is silo'ed and copyrighted and inhibits gathering in the first place. I'd like to be part of an effort to organize it but fear that some of the silo'ing is intentional. I respect that, but still think it's a major put-off, and ultimately self-defeating.
I'm also interested in groups who stress history/preservation/promo/outreach. I would love to see a revival in general interest, and that doesn't happen accidentally. We're fighting against fuel prices and availability questions, as well as ecological concerns and the broader economy. The whole industry is suffering, which could be a great opportunity -- I'd be thrilled to see people spending less for a superior machine. I think they would, if they knew about it and if it didn't come with all the unknowns. That's a hard problem, but there aren't THAT many of these coaches out there (1 TZE per 38k USA population?), and I feel like they should all have owners.
I mentioned before on another thread that I wonder what the economically-supported "proper" number of TZEs is in the world. Right now, the answer appears to be "fewer than currently exist", since the low end ones are selling at prices below salvage value. I hope that can change.

FMCA is the umbrella under which we all exist. Membership in FMCA get you
and the clubs something you don't think about -- insurance. If you never use
it you never missed it. If you do you'll praise it's existence for a long
time.
GMCMI, Western States and Eastern States are considered "technical" clubs.
That means they're organized for the purpose of promoting technical aspects
of ownership by having seminars at all rallies/conventions. MI is like the
paint company, they "blanket the earth". Western States is for, well, you
know. Eastern States has members who's state of consciousness touches the
Mississippi (or an imaginary line running up through Canada) and eastward to
the Atlantic.
The others are considered social clubs, which means they don't focus on
seminars but on having unplanned fun at rallies. (Does that mean the rest of
us plan our fun?)
Yes, there's an overlap which is why several owners are members of multiple
groups. The overlap, honestly, has to do with the social aspect -- it's a
"birds of a feather" type of thing. We may own GMCs but, once acquainted
personally, tend to think of each other as friends or family.
Now, to the rest, I'd appreciate having you as a member of Eastern States.
Living in the Southeast isn't a requirement. You'd be a great addition for
us. For that fact, to any club. Your keen interest and seeming willingness
to collect information is of great value.

OK, now I have a handle on it. I'm putting my name and address on the Black List, and I have a shot of decent sauce for anyone who wanders by here. The technical aspect ios what I'm looking for. Without slight to the more social clubs. My socializing after a show runs more to conversations areounfd the BBQ like "That poor Poothound couldn't move at all." Or "Judge xxx has gone blind, you were robbed." When someone's dog goes to the end of its lead after another and makes a show of teeth and noise, the miscreant merely gets crated, the owner says 'sorry' and everybody else says 'it happens'. It's just as social, the focus is different.

I hope. I've got to get back to the Toad for the GMC - a '65 Dart 270 trim wagon I'm redoing. 273 C.I.D. LA engne, fairly mild (pump premium) tune. It's gonna look good behind the coach.

Andrew, most GMCers have dogs, and many of them bring grandkids on Rallys.
If you are using that criterea to not join a group, it is not well founded.
Join a group that is in your area and it will open your eyes to a whole
other experience. I am not a "joiner" either, and I would not trade my GMC
experiences for any other activity that I have done in my life. Try it, you
will like it, and Coachnet towing can't be beat either.

Byron, thanks for the overview. I've been reading the GMCES tech archives and planning to join. We won't be east-coasters for much longer, but I've spent half my life on this side of the mighty Mississip, so I guess part of me will never leave.
Jim, I'm glad to hear that we won't be chased out with pitchforks if we show up with kids. They're really quite well-behaved, and the oldest (5 years..."and a half", as he reminds us frequently) can differentiate between several dozen tools, find socket sizes, etc. He's a great gopher. Nice kid, too.
The dog isn't nearly as helpful, but she's almost as friendly. And perhaps a little bit better behaved.
