Robin,

I noticed in your You Tube video you had the GMC Operators Manual and
Coachman Owners Manual; if you have not already done so I would suggest you
begin reading them. I would start with the Coachman Owners Manual, then the
GMC Operators Manual.

Here's a link to the Maintenance Manual and Parts Book.

http://www.bdub.net/factory-manuals.html

I would suggest you download and print them out and when you go out to the
GMC exploring bring them with you and reference them. I can assure you that
it will help you to learn about your GMC.

I've been using them as bed time reading since I owned mine. They are GA RON
TEED to put you to sleep! ;-)

Rob M.

http://www.bdub.net/factory-manuals.html

I've been using them as bed time reading since I owned mine. They are GA RON TEED to put you to sleep! Wink

I second the recommendation.

The Operator's Manual is a quick read, and I'm about 500 of 800 pages through the Maintenance Manual too (with about 40% comprehension -- and a greatly increased appreciation for the complexity of automatic transmissions...I'm not sure how I thought they worked, but wow!).

The Maintenance Manual is really quite readable, and I was surprised to see decent "Theory of Operation" sections for most major systems. I guess I was expecting more of a reference orientation / shop manual.

I downloaded the Maintenance Manual from bdub.net ( http://www.bdub.net/factory-manuals.html ). It's great and perfectly legible, but some of the denser/darker photos and diagrams are a little hard to see clearly.

Tom Lins also sells a DVD full of scanned documentation ( http://www.bdub.net/tomlins/index.html ). I'm wondering if those images are more clear. Tom mentions 256 shade grayscale, which should be good, but there are also a few colorized pages in the transmission section of the other one which might be correspondingly harder to follow. The colorization might have been done by hand, with a marker.

Example pages in X-7425 (1973-1974 Maintenance Manual):
pg 7-13 diagram is colorized, small markings are hard to read.
pg 7-25 photo is dark, hard to see where all the lines go.

Has anyone compared them?

Tom Lins DVDs are great! I purchased the Cinnebar printed manuals when I first got my coach, and most of the photos are too dark to make out, but the DVDs are quite clear and very helpful.

Best money I've spent on the coach. Now, if I could only figure out how to load that information into my iPad as well!

Ah, another question I meant to ask. Are Tom's scans PDFs or are they buried in a DVD format and not easy to access directly?

I'll still order them if the resolution is HQ, but iPad accessibility would make them way more useful to me.

Thanks for the info!

I have Tom Lins CDs and they are very good. Have nothing to compare them
with but, they have lots of information and you can print the page or pages
you are referencing. Very handy.

Like George, I have both sets. The shop here in Richmond that does most of the work on ANNIE has downloaded Tom's DVDs in the Shop's computer and when ever they work on her they bring up the required pages and print them out. The mechanic can then have a reference right there next to him (without greasing up the manual's pages).

G'day,

Agreed! Tom's DVD's are great!

The Blue Streak's PO bought a set of Cinnabar's reprints and as noted they
leave a lot to be desired.

I set up an eBay search and found an original set for a reasonable price.

Being an ex aircraft mechanic I am a bit pedantic and will review the
Maintenance Manual before I do any task.

I also peruse Gene's website for helpful tips.

It's AMAZING how easy stuff can be if you do a bit of homework BEFORE you
begin the job!

Self-righteous switch placed in the "off" position! ;-)

It's not too tough if you have loaded the Books app. From iTunes import the PDF's as books, and when you sync the iPad, if you choose to sync books, it will appear! I've done this on mine and love it.

When I get home I'll try to refresh my memory to see if I can offer any other help.

I use the GoodReader app to read technical PDFs.

http://www.goodreader.net/goodreader.html

iBooks is nicer, and great for novels. But if you want to annotate pages and create lots of labelled bookmarks, GoodReader is the way to go, imho.

(Finger poised on the Order button -- can you extract individual PDFs/whatevers from Tom's DVD?)

I understand that you can email a pdf to a kindle, but there is some small charge for it, like 25 cents, or something.

Yes - you can send "approved content" to your kindle. It has to go through their e-mail system, probably to set the formatting.

George and Andrew,

All of the Tom Lins files are *.pdf. If I can have them all on a Droid, you should be able to load them on an iAnything. The only problem I have had is that one has a page definition set so it doesn't like my large/fast printer.

I have most of the books, but I only carry them because I am paranoid. (I don't mind it, it serves me well on the water.)

The files can be transferred to an iPad using iTunes and iBooks. Once I loaded them into the iTunes book library from my PC, I was able to sync them into my iPad. (I'd be lying to say that I remember totally how I did it, but it seems to proceed pretty intuitavely once you start playing around with the iPad). They are quite readable and it certainly is nice to be able to have this much information available in such a small space. In addition to the manuals, I also downloaded the Blacklist onto my iPad.

It's a bit confusing as the iPads have iBooks, iTunes, and iPod applications, and you're not always sure which you should use to try to do what you want. I'm sure as I have mine longer, it will be clearer with use. I am one that misses having an old, printed manual to refer to (but I can see the rational of having the information available in an easy to update format on the internet).

One of the tools I use the most on my iPad and iPhone is search. It's fast.

Thanks, George. I'm sure there will be a few new iPad users soon and having all that information at your fingertips is very helpful.
