OK - I'm officially frustrated. My tires are all within the 5 year date codes, but they are getting close. They are the wrong size and I'm ready to get new tires. My plan had been to be on the 18 month plan. Buy 2 now, 2 in 18 months and...well, you get the picture. Things are not working as planned.
The big box stores - Sears, Walmart, Sams, etc. all have to special order tires and they will guarantee that they are not over 3 years old. Big deal! Likewise with Tire Rack. They don't want to talk about DOT dates.
Dealing with local tire stores has been likewise frustrating. One says that the BFG tires I'd like to have are on "national backorder". He can get me "GT Radials" that are 5 months old. I don't want 5 month old tires and I've never heard of GT radials.
Found some Firestone HT Transforce tires but they are expensive -$180. Probably better tire than I'll ever need. That is an option. They are coming in on Tuesday and I'll be able to look at the dates.
Local Goodyear dealer - you're gonna love this - had 2 in stock but would not go back in the warehouse to look at DOT dates without a firm sale.
I'm headed for the big city (Atlanta) this weekend and thought i might just hit a couple of the tire stores to see what they had.
At the rate we are able to use the GMC I probably will not have 10,000 miles on these tires when they age out. At this point I think I want to buy the cheapest thing I can find and go with it. Any suggestions?

Local (Atlanta) Pep Boystend towards scam artists. I'd ask NTB and Nally Morot Truck locally.

Stick, I have never heard of such problems. I did get the "shaft" at a Les Swab's in Tilamook though. Bought two big tires for the baja. 2 years later they were dry rotting. Looked at the date code, it had been filed off. No more buisness with those guys.
Here, when I buy 2 tires, every 2 years, I ask for date codes within 30 days and get them every time. Our tire folks are more hungry for buisness here in SEMO I guess.
You might have better luck with one of the internet dealers.

Stick,
You need to check Discount Tire. There are 2 stores within 60 miles
of you:
Discount Tire
2827 Watson Blvd
Warner Robins, GA 31093
(478) 971-1712
Discount Tire (GAA-26)
4534 Log Cabin Drive
Macon, GA 31204
(478) 757-1868
Or online: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/findTireSearch.do
I have nothing but good service from them.
I just bought Michelin LTX tires for my new Buskirk stretch coach.
Here is a listing of tires that would fit your requirements.

Funny ive never had a problem with PEP Boys I had a flat a few times there warranty is excellent. My wifes car has them Both of my daughters have them. I dont hear much whine or roar out of them on there pickups. They have Dodges with 20" rims on them and they are E rated. But maybe its because they have the HEMI'S also and you cant hear over the sucking of fuel.Wana know something hard to buy try buing aircraft tires whole different ball game.

I have found these guys to be straight up and only, go there for tires.
I just tell them what I want, date code, etc, and they do it.
great guys to do business with

Well, these guys knew I would not be back. If I was close I am sure I could get justice done. There are none of this franchise around here or I would be on their doorstep. Why would a company like this do such a thing? I suspect it was a local guy. I could never figure out how to file a complaint with the head office. I do have my paperwork but I could not prove who did the grinding off of the date code. They would say I did it. Its my own fault anyway for not knowing any better at the time. Gene, I would tell you to keep trading with those you know and respect and I will try to do the same thing.

Age is only one of the many considerations you need to use to replace tires. Setting in the sun in a high ozone area will kill them before the "age" out. Light but frequent use with storage out of the sun and ozone they will be good for a LOT longer than others. Running with low pressure, flats, running over curbs and having large amounts of toe will cause tires to need replacement earlier... if if they have good tread. Your coach... your money... your choice.
As long as you are buying a fairly popular size tire, you shouldn't have to much trouble getting recently made tires. If the tire store doesn't understand that you want to check them BEFORE they are mounted, they do not want your bussiness. Be sure to talk to the store manager if you have problems.... you know all workers are lazy. (humor)
I have 2 sets of Firestone Transforce tires. Some 16.5 (6 years old) and some 16 inch (less than a year). They seem to be good tires. I do NOT remember paying that much for them.
As most of us should replace our tires before they wear out, I agree with the cheap tires idea.
Note you can sell your older used tires for someone to use on their pick-up or something. This should off-set the cost of the new ones. You might have to replace them in groups of 4...

Dan,
I seem to recall (I haven't found it again - yet) but I believe that removing the DOT required tire data prior to sale is a federal crime. That data is required record in the case of a recall. It is supposed to be on the sales paperwork also.
If I find it, I'll get back to you.

I got the new Eagles today, OH BOY! Thanks Jim K. As to tires, my old ones are 9 + years, so if there is no checking and especially in the treads, look closely, I would do the two year plan. Discount tire had the best price in this area, 158 for 275/75/16 E BFG Commerial TA. They also have the best out the door price, even though they did not like my duro bead balancing idea. The only drawback is their stock is about 5 months old. You may have better luck, as each place has different stocking dates. Depends on when they recieved thier shipment. The BFG's seem to be the choice, based on what I have read on the forum. Correct me if I am wrong.
