While my engine is being rebuilt, I am taking the opportunity to check out the loose spot in my steering. I checked all the ball joints, tie rod ends etc and they are all like new and tight. When I turn the wheel the shaft going into the steering box turns but the output shaft attached to what I am calling the pitman arm does not turn at all. It only turns when I turn the wheel beyond the loose spot which is about 2 inches either way. Can the box be adjusted or is it just shot?

Rick,
Unfortunately checking the tie rod ends with the coach off the ground
doesn't work. The coach MUST be on all six wheels and the steering wheel /
wheels straight ahead. This is the position they wear as that's the way a
coach spends most of it's time. I verified this at the Bean Station Rally.
As far as the steering box goes it can be adjusted. To do it correctly check
the Maintenance Manual and follow the procedure.

These gears very rarely wear out although the seals may leak at times. When you check free ply, make sure the engine is running to get a true indication. I think you'll be surprised at the difference in readings between engine on or off. They can be adjusted but go by the book to do it right.
