It would depend on if the journal in question is damaged. In some cases, just doing a "bottom end" rebuild would do the trick. Kinda depends on the mileage & any other problems present. A spun bearing isn't a game killer. If nothing else, you could stick in a new set just to get you to Patterson's or wherever you're gonna get the engine done. If I could afford it, I'd prefer that someone who'd replaced a GMC engine before did the R&R. I once had a Rambler American with a bad rod journal that knocked out bearings several times before I found a good crank to fix it. I replaced the crankshaft with the motor still in the car & never touched the top of the motor.
I'm sure that this opinion isn't the popular one, but it's mine...
