How do you go about flushing out the AC system? Is it just a matter of solvent and compressed air or must you use some kind of pump?

you shouldn't need to flush the system to change a seal. If you feel a need to use new oil I would just dump the old oil and slosh a little solvent in the compressor or not while you have it out and refill it with mineral oil. I wouldn't use Ester oil unless you want to go thru the hassel of doing the whole system. You are going to recharge with Duracool so it is fine with mineral oil.

You can get by fine by not changing the oil again but the Duracool will need to be recharged. As you probibly know there is a special tool needed to remove the clutch in order to get at the seal. Some say they have done it with the compressor in place but I removed mine . The seal is easy after the clutch is removed. I guess if the clutch bearing is not noisy or rough feeling it can be reused. Look close at the compressor shaft when you have the seal off to be sure the new one will not leak. When you assemble it keep it clean and add a drop or 2 of oil to the rotating surface. The tool is not expensive and can sometimes be rented or borrowed from an autoparts place. You might want to try removing the clutch on your spare to get the feel of changing it. It isn't difficult.Don't worry about the dryer it will be ok but you should vacuum the system before charging again or at least purge it with refrigerant to get all the air out.

Ok, thanks. I have the clutch from my other compressor on this one. So, I can take a look at that. We borrowed the tools from Autozone to remove and install.
