Guys,

Discount Tire just called me asking more questions about the wheels. He was preparing the wheels for me before I arrived this afternoon. He asked me if my current wheels had a "ring" that surrounds or covers the lug nuts because the wheels did not come with the rings. Of course I said no my wheels do not. I asked him what the purpose of the ring was and he really did not know but said every dually he has worked on has this ring. I am going to go see the wheels this afternoon and verify if they will fit the GMC.

Does anyone have an idea what the purpose of this ring is?

Jon

I have the rings with my 16" wheels. They are not on the GMC at this time. I'll have a look to see what is the purpose.

OK, the wheels I have are from a 1 ton dually. The lug nut holes are not countersunk. The rings are countersunk to take the tapered? wheel nuts.
On my GMC with the 16.5 wheels, I believe the lug nuts are flanged which will work with the wheels with out the rings.
Does this make sense?

He wouldn't be referring to split rims, would he?

The ring covers the lug nut area.

What brand wheels are you speaking of?
The older dullie wheels had a 3/16 thick spacer to use to clear the
tire from some suspension parts.
Back then they were all non hub centered, so you were able to use it
even when the hub did not touch the wheels.

I sure hope not. In a previous life I worked in a garage in a steel mill. I sure hated those those split rims and worked ont hem with a lot of caution. We placed them in a cage before airing them up. I saw one of those let loose one. It almost destroyed the cage.

Okay everyone here is the poop so far. The guy from DT called me earlier this week telling me about how the wheels that they ordered needs some sort of ring adapter. Not knowing what this guys was talking about I went to DT to have a look for myself.

What I found was a raised counter sink round every other stud hole of the wheel. So evidently there is some sort of ring adapter that goes over the lug holes that is needed for this type of wheel. So obviously this was not going to work out.

So while I was there the guy called the wheel company and asked them to send the correct wheels with the correct wheel specs.

Well, today the second set of wheels came in and they looked identical to the original wheels so things were looking up. So they proceeded to test fit the wheel and what do you know......the damn center bore is to large! We measured the bore and it was 123mm, should be 116mm. DT guys apologized and assured me they will find the correct wheel for me. The have several sources and at least one of them here in Indy.

So now I have to wait until Monday to find out when they can get the correct wheels.

I will keep you all posted.

Yes, you would think a tire shop should know more than us.
We know more than them in many cases as we have gone through the same exercise.
Believe it or not,the Coach is not as common and straight forward as
you think and your really not getting much of a savings.

Jim,

What do you mean by "not getting much saving"? Do you sell the correct steel wheels? For sure if you do I would be interested. DT price is around $86 per wheel, although that figure was after some negotiating.
