Well, I'm learning alot at this site. Wish I would have known about this wealth of knowledge before our purchase.
But anyway,
I found out our unit is a Sequoia(?) model ZE06581 and it is a 1973, 11-29-73 unit. Got that from the sticker in the glove box today. How could it be built in '73, but have a TZE number depicting a '74 number?
The salesman was a total putz and I had a weird feeling about him. We didn't get to see the title as he didn't know where it was. It was advertised as a 1974 Expedition Yukon.
Because of the interior colors and blue stipes I figured it to be a Glacier...but now I believe its a Sequoia.
There is a Florida registration sticker on it and an Idaho metal ID RVI 36792 from 1990
So the girl has been around.

I've gotten to know ours inside and out and love every minute of it.
Enjoy and if I can ever help, just ask.

Model year changeovers "normally" occur around
late July through early September with fudge room
a couple of weeks either way. It's just the way it
is with automobiles. If you are talking about
vehicles made overseas, you would probably see a
"back up" to early July or even late June!
Any vehicle built in November would certainly
be labelled as a following year model.

Peg,
If your motorhome was built on 11-29-73 it is a 1974 model year. Long story, but model years are determined by the manufacturer, and not the calendar. The only constraint is, there is an EPA ruling that any given model year can't have more than one January 1st in it, which was put in place to put limits on "gaming" of Corporate Average Fuel Economy rules. (the fuel economy rules don't apply to motorhomes but the one January 1st rule does.) Traditionally, for sales reporting purposes, model years are considered to run from October 1st to September 30th, but it ultimately is tied to the VIN on the vehicle, and is specific to the manufacturer, year, and plant. Generally, vehicle model years are switched in July, when plants are down for summer vacation, but it can vary with things like mid-year model changes and such. Probably more info than you wanted from someone who was once disturbingly familiar with creative fuel economy accounting.

I'm probably mixing threads here as well, but I have a box full of old GMC hubcaps as I switched to aluminum wheels, and I suspect many others do as well. Unfortunately, they probably cost more to ship than their worth. Probably good items to hunt down at various rally's when you get through some work and get out on the road

Thanks for the explanation, C and Craig, Mac, et al...I should have known this. I lived in Detroit 1972-1978, DUH. Do you know I never saw one of these GMC's on the road during that time????
Thank you for the offer on the hubcaps Craig. That is VERY nice of you.... Interesting REASON for the model year starting in Aug.
I will let you know. I told Mark this morning as we were searching for the hubcaps....why don't we just chrome the wheels? He said he wasn't sure what it would cost. We had some other things Mark has made like crosses made from RR spikes etc chromed...

I would not spend the money to even have 16.5 inch wheels powder coated, much less chromed! I would "rattle can" paint them....
The CoOp web site says 16.5 inch accessories (Hub caps and the like) are going away due to DOT regulations or something. If so, tires will be going soon also.
IF you are going to get steel wheels chromed, get some 16 inch wheels, ensure they fit and are true... THEN chrome them. It would be cheaper to get eagles from JimK, but some like the look of the "steelies."
In the mean-time, someone said they have (10) of the 16.5 inch plastic wheel covers that look like Aluminium wheels for cheap. If you are going to use 16.5 inch wheels for a season or two, it is a very good deal. I currently have 6 of these caps... but two coaches with steel wheels!

Some of what the guys on the line must have been talking about when they built our motorhome...
# November 17
* Watergate scandal: In Orlando, Florida, U.S. President Richard Nixon tells 400 Associated Press managing editors "I am not a crook."
* The Athens Polytechnic uprising occurs against the military regime in Athens, Greece.
# November 21 – U.S. President Richard Nixon's attorney, J. Fred Buzhardt, reveals the existence of an 18½-minute gap in one of the White House tape recordings related to Watergate.
# November 25 – [B]Greek dictator George Papadopoulos is ousted in a military coup led by Lieutenant General Phaidon Gizikis.
# November 27 – The United States Senate votes 92–3 to confirm Gerald Ford as Vice President of the United States.
# November 29 – 104 people are killed in a Taiyo department store fire in Kumamoto, Kyūshū, Japan.
Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973
And Kumamoto is still in the news. Military coups still happen. And politics as usual.

I second that. Use a wire brush to prep the wheels, mask around the wheel
with tape and use silver paint with a rust inhibitor. Cover the caps if you
like but paint the steel wheel. It'll look quite OK. Do as I did, put the
GMC wheel cover on the spare and choose the best looking one.

JC Whitney sells a spray paint called "almost Chrome" I have been using it, works really good, looks more like a polished aluminum.
________________________________________________________
I think chrome is too much work to clean and will always have the problem of rust.
It is just too easy to clean the wheels and paint them, rattle can is easy but you have to mask off the tires.
As for hubcaps do inquire about Jim Bounds caps that similate Alcoas. Silly easy to clean and sharpen up the coach.
The GMC has 2 inherent things you need to look at right away.
1. You will need to add a vacuum pump onto the brake booster.
The reason is because the GMC has considerable weight and the brakes need that vacuum to stop her, especially on a hill. If your engine stalls, you will lose vacuum from the engine providing no force but your foot to the brakes. The vacuum pump provides the vacuum that is needed when the engine stops to hold the GMC.
2. A device called an APC is really inexpensive, is attached to the back of your alternator and prevents backfeeding current to the harness under the dash. Normal operation would not need this but if the alternator/regulator malfunctions, it can send current back to the dash and damage the wiring harness.
You might have the APC as many have installed them. Look and see if an addition to the connector is behind the alternator, it has red wires and is about 6 inches long. The wire that normally plugs into the alternator will plug into the APC and the APC plugs into the Alternator. Very simple. If you have it you will see it..
Check your airbags, if you have the original manufacturer AirBags, you need to check for aging, cracks. The OEM bags are not made anymore but are available for a high price. There are several options to replace the system with a more up to date bag system, just so you know.
I don't know if you talked about your gem, I have not seen the story if you have. You sound like you will enjoy a GMC MotorHome and its many ways to be used, they talk about it all the time here, keep watching, the topics are like a big parade, they keep changing every day.
I have one thought.... Though I am not totally sure, I thought a blue interior was avalailable ONLY in the Glacier. I can look around but someone may chime in. I would think you have a good chance of having a Glacier model. Though over the years most have been changed out and upgraded so Models are mostly by name now and not by what it was built with.
Good luck and enjoy. As you work on them, they just keep looking better....

Just like a well dressed man/lady....if their shoes aren't polished it ruins the whole outfit!

Thank you very much on these two tips. I have read about both but I could not remember enough about either item to tell Mark they were needed. If I don't let him know the reason "why" than he thinks its an add on...So I appreciate this explanation and will check for the APC when its a bit warmer outside.
Larry C | Check your airbags, if you have the original manufacturer AirBags, you need to check for aging, cracks. The OEM bags are not made anymore but are available for a high price. There are several options to replace the system with a more up to date bag system, just so you know.

Mark wanted the 4 bagger and I found an OEM on line with a pic from someone on this site. He would love to go 4 bagger right now. There is a big cost. He will spend this coming weekend in the shop with his baby. Then we will have a shopping list. Shocks for sure. Dependent on what Mark finds mechanically will dictate drivable items like tires etc. If there are big projects, drivable items will have to wait.
I mean, the gas tank leaks when one makes a left hand turn or stops with any exertion...so, there are big items before we can do new and improved...the APC is necessary right now it seems.
The generator needs to be worked on and the compressor, I want new and improved, must have a leak in the lines. We thought one of the bags was leaking...now it must be the lines/valves as its holding air in the HOLD position. One bag is tattered/worn though so it DOES need to be replaced. The other looks pretty good. I'm sure we will eventually have the 4 bagger though.
Larry C | I don't know if you talked about your gem, I have not seen the story if you have. You sound like you will enjoy a GMC MotorHome and its many ways to be used, they talk about it all the time here, keep watching, the topics are like a big parade, they keep changing every day.

We haven't talked too much....except "panic talks" as we try to get her home...dip stick...found out it was an oil monitor...what a nifty device, but want to make sure it works, however...
We will find out this weekend when Mark gives her an oil change.
Larry C | I have one thought.... Though I am not totally sure, I thought a blue interior was avalailable ONLY in the Glacier. I can look around but someone may chime in. Yes I thought she was a Glacier because of the blue...She's a Sequoia according to TZE and the glove box. ZE06581....There is green indoor outdoor, or so it seems, in the bottom of the cupboards and other areas, if that helps.
Larry C | Good luck and enjoy. As you work on them, they just keep looking better....

Thanks very much for the APC (and description of where to find it) and vacuum info...we'll work on the airbag system dependent on money needs after "examination."
This sure is a great site with a whole bunch of great people, knowledge, and resources. Thank you again everyone.
Now I've got to get some stuff done before I head out to look for an APC behind the alternator...
