I dropped the fuel tanks today and now I am trying to figure out how the sending units come out?

Does anyone have a workable method to unscrew the top plates?

Screwdriver and a hammer. Just hit it in the right place and it rotates...

a definition of the 'right place ' would be helpful.

As you tap on it, the ring tends to drift toward the edge. There are three "tabs" that stick straight up and can be tapped. Sometimes you have to try all three, and then change off. I use the word tap loosely. They will probably show a little scaring on the tabs by the time it is rotating. They go counter clockwise.

Larry,
The "right way" is to use a special tool that fits the 3 tabs that stick up from the locking ring. I've never seen one outside the dealership I worked for 30 years ago. But, you can gently tap on the three tabs going around the ring, turning it counter clockwise to remove it. I would use a brass punch if you have one, as it slightly reduces the chance of a wayward spark. These tabs stick up maybe 3/8" vertically, are about 1/2 long, and are to the inboard side of the ring on the tank. You are turning a soon to be loose ring that sits underneath the tank one until slots on it line up and you can pull the tank unit and ring out. A little hard to describe without pictures, but I don't have any.

Larry,

This photo shows the "cam lock" used to hold the fuel sender into the tank.

This and the description others have provided should make it go ok.

Got them off. thanks everyone for the information.

I had to get my reading glasses out to see the tabs.

Preliminary viewing of the inside of the tank and filter socks looks good.

thanks again.

I see you have your answer. Have you picked up that its a good idea to replace the lines across the top of the tanks with steel and to leave the filter socks off? Add filters outside the tank which are simple to change.
