Ok, so the Royale cometh with an empty power drawer.

The Palm Beach that I found rotting in the barn has an Onan that
thieves attempted to take, but it was just too heavy, and it's sitting
in the middle of the barn floor. It's been in the barn for 20+ years.

Question: Are Onans robust enough that this one could be brought back
to life? What should I offer the guy for it, keeping in mind it may be
dead as a doornail?

If I can't acquire and repair an Onan or other genny for cheap, I'll
just bite the bullet and get the latest-greatest Generac, a Q55-G
Generac that costs a wad-o-dough.

Thoughts?

Robin,

The Onan is a tough generator and the one in the warehouse could likely be resurrected. It would be the easiest install as it was made for the spot. Fair market about $200-300 as is where is.
Some have gone to the Honda (no longer made) -- here is one for sale

The Generac has also been used and is popular with Miguel of MGM GMC.

Change the oil, clean the carb, adjust the points and it'll probably start right up.
Try offering his $50 and then go to $100 of you have to.
Probably worth quite a bit more.

The biggest problem you will have with that Onan is moving it. They weigh 405 lbs. Make sure you get the shell with it.

Onan's has a tapped hole on the intake manifold for a lifting eye. Suggest that you use it, makes it easier. Mr. Onan is heavy, bring friends.

The lifting eye and a roll around engine hoist do a nice job of moving the old Onan. It really is that heavy!

I replaced mine with a Generac Primepac, and it seems to work well. Miguel was a big help in freely giving hints on the installation, and I feel better with a new generator that hopefully should cause fewer problems than keeping the old 'Troll' going.

I had re-built/repaired the original 4KW Onan that came with our coach so many times, I re-named it "Lazarus".

I did eventually change generators and put in a water cooled Honda but I still have the old Onan, "pickled" and shrunk wrapped, sitting on a shelf in my barn(just in case).
