G'day,
I got underway from Ken and Elaine's in Americus at 8:30 heading for Chuck
and Cathy Boyd's in Knoxville Wednesday morning. GPS said it was 340
something miles and 5 something hours which would have put me in Knoxville
around 2:30 - 3:00 including lunch and gas stops.
No problems until I decided to stop for gas and lunch at a Subway. It was in
front of a motel and I saw a lane on the left side of the subway that I
figger'd went around the motel too.
WRONG!
When I pulled down behind the motel I found it was a dead end. S%&T!! I have
problems backing up Double Trouble with no towd, with a towd I figger'd it
would be damn near impossible but decided to try it. FAGITABOUT IT! I wound
up detaching the Tracker and pushing it to the side and then turning the GMC
around and re hooking it back up. Because I was on my own that took a good
15-20 minutes. I then went inside got my sandwich and got back on the road.
I had been listening to the weather reports and they were talking about the
storm fronts but I calculated that I would be at C & C's. Made good progress
until I got about 25 miles south of Knoxville when the GEN light began
flickering and finally came on solid. I monitored my volt meter and noted
that it was slowly dropping. I got off the freeway and on to Oak Ridge Road
about 3 miles from C & C's. I had to stop at a red light and when I went to
pull away Double Trouble died. DAMN! About three seconds later it dawned on
me to switch to BAT BOOST and she fired right back up! Thank you Lord!
I then made it to Chuck's barn and unhitched the Tracker and took a quick
look at the alternator. The stud and nut the main output attaches to had
come out and was hanging in free air. Having "troubleshot" that problem
Chuck and I headed to the house where Cathy prepared a DE-LICIOUS dinner of
baked fish, fried shrimp, rice, and salad.
After dinner Chuck, Luther and I headed back to the barn to replace the
alternator (I carry a spare along with a water pump, starter, clutch fan,
and two OEM spare bags). A couple hours later the new alternator was in and
putting out 14 VDC according to my gage. The old alternator never put out
more than 13.5!
We then went over Wal Mart so I could by some groceries as I hadn't gotten a
chance to do so. I got us some Blue Bell Supreme and we all had a bowl to
celebrate our success!
I returned to Double Trouble and slept inside Chuck's barn that night. It
was a good thing too as the rain was seriously heavy (like a fat cow peeing
on a flat rock as they say in Texas). Sleeping inside metal roofed barn with
all that rain was like sleeping in a snare drum! ;-)
The next day Chuck, Cathy, Luther, Wanda, and I headed for Bean station and
were met en route by Marie Mondello and her sister. We convoyed the 50 odd
miles together.
We had a presentation by Al Branscombe on the Kelsey Hayes caliper he is
building a kit for so we can have good parking brakes on our GMC's.
I validate the procedure I wrote (and Byron posted on the GMCES Website) and
found that with the coach on all four wheels one could check the tie rod
ends for wear. We used Robert Peesel's coach and I found a slight amount of
movement between the ball and shaft and socket on both outer tie rod ends. I
will revise the procedure as a result. I have another GMC owner that has
asked me to check his which I will do just to make sure what I write is
repeatable.
As I type George Zhookoff and Gary Kosier and a team of GMC elves are
installing the reaction arm system he won from Jim K on his coach and Chuck
Boyd and Ken H are helping Robert Peesel replace his front bearings.
The weather was and is getting better by the hour, it is 12:30 on Friday and
it is a beautiful cool sunny day.
That's the good news!
Here's the bad news, I got up this morning to find a water leak, it looks
like it is in the system that supplies the loo (toilet) with fresh water for
flushing! Never a dull moment when you own a GMC!

Rob M.
