I'm fairly new to the motorhome lifestyle and so are my folks who recently bought a 40' SOB. They have described a couple of incidences where they felt vulnerable in their RV and have considered purchasing a handgun. Our family isn't necessarily anti-gun, but none of us have owned guns. I'm feeling pretty conflicted about the whole thing as I have grade-school and teenagers that could be at risk if there were a gun around. On the other hand, if Rv'ers are potential targets, I want at least a deterent.
My gut feeling is I don't want one, but don't want to be nieve to the risk either.

As a Primary Marksmanship Instructor, I taught Marine recruits how to shoot. I have never felt the need to own a fire arm, but understand the needs of many who do. Most school age kids can be taught firearm safety. If they understand what a firearm can and can not do, they will treat them with the respect they deserve.
With out the proper training for everyone in the house, I wouldn't have both the gun and the ammo in the house.
I have a slight attraction to cap and ball revolvers... but not for home protection.

A gun is a personal choice. If you chose to have a gun you must also train anyone who has access to it in it's proper use. You also need to properly store it with a trigger lock or in a safe so that it cannot be accessed by someone that does not understand how to use it properly.

From the time I was seven years old I knew my dad kept a loaded 12 gauge shotgun in his closet and a 6" 357 revolver in his dresser drawer. Neither was locked and neither had trigger locks. He did however instruct me on how to use them and taught me respect for them.
36 years later those same guns are in the same places and to this day I've never touched them. Not because I'm afraid of them but because I was taught to respect them.

I believe strongly in a persons right to protect themselves and I take the FAR FAR right view on the second amendment.
But i don't own a gun.
The statistics say that guns acquired for protection are much more likely to kill a member of your family than an intruder.
I've traveled all over the country, under all conditions, i've encountered strange and freaky people but I've never felt threatened enough to want the hassle of worrying about a gun.

There is nothing as recognizable and as fearsome to an intruder as a 12 gauge pump shotgun racheting a shell into the chamber.

I have a permit my wife has a permit and my 2 daughters have permits. I carry all the time.We have been around hunting all our lives and all has had hunter saftey courses. It is a personal choice but i would rather carry one and not need it than need it and not have one. We did take the time and have NRA training.

And just behind the sound of that shotgun racking a shell is the quite
similar sound of a Colt .45 semi-auto pistol in the same action!

Personnally, I favor Tasors, but they don't really have a lot of opportunity to save the day, except for the cops who have you against the car anyway. I watch those COPS shows, those tasers knock em down.
Guns are getting real serious. Too many politicians have forgotton that this country developed with guns. today they know where every gun is and if you dare use it, you are likely to go to jail, not the criminal.
Wasn't there a recent discussion about this and someone piped in there and sang about the holy benefits of WASP SPRAY. the kind that shoots about 20 foot stream;..... for the Wasps... Simple, easy, legal, for the wasps.... blinding, painful but not permanent.... for the wasps. When camping, don't leave home without it.... for the wasps....
As I recall.....

Rather than a gun you might consider a can or two of wasp spray kept in handy places. That stuff will shoot 20-30 feet and raise all kinds of hell with the person on the other end.

It's been quite a while since I had to help circle the RVs and defend myself
from an Indian attack.
I own a gun. It's in the closet. The ammo is outside.
Since we tend to stay at KOA campgrounds, state parks and the various Camp
Walmarts distributed throughout the US we don't worry about break-ins, etc.
The smart thing to do is park with the door toward the entrance of a store
when at Walmart or else point toward a video camera.
I'd suggest your parents get a motion-sensitive light for the porch light if
they feel some concern. Also, tell them to park on the good side of the
tracks.
