There is a means to reduce the level of frustration (but probably not the pain) at the gas pumps. Not just for Rob.
The pump charge limit (typically 75$us) is imposed by the card companies and does not apply to a verified card purchase.
If you (like me) hate having to restart the pump three (maybe four in some places) to fill the tanks on a GMC, then just start the fill with the "Pay Inside" button. Then, the pump will run as long as the attendant allows.
So - If you do not shove the plastic into the slot, just start the pump on the "Pay Inside" button and let it run. After lunch and when the pump shuts down, then go inside and hand the counter person the card. One slip to mark and file and probably no more stop time when you include the three (or four) card restarts.

You will usually have to take your credit card inside
to the cashier before he/she will turn on the pump!
OR, stop to top off every two to three hours (100 to
180 miles) and you will never run into the $75 limit.
It's likely that the stop to rest and stretch your
legs will be good for your body, refresh your attention
span, and maybe even prevent DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
from causing a stroke from sitting on your tush for long
periods of time!!!

It is not the CC company determining the limit. It is the retailer. They run a pre-approval request to the CC company for a given amount. Once approved they turn on the pump for that amount. Most ask for $75.00 At flying J they ask for either $125 or $150.00.
The reason to keep it low is because of debit cards. Many banks put a hold on your account for the pre-approved amount no matter how much you actually buy. Sometimes this hold can be up to two weeks.

Mike,
I have two United Airlines credit cards (one Visa one M/C) that I got before
I retired to Australia. The M/C has my Aussie address on it and the Visa has
the address of a friend of mine in Houston.
I have been using the Visa card for the past three years without any
problems. When I reach the limit for the card I remove the fuel nozzle from
the coach; put it back in the gas pump, finish the transaction, and print a
receipt. I then wait until the pump resets and re-insert the same card and
start over.
I have done that at least four times since I left Houston for Bean Station
three days ago and so far it has worked.
Mark and Gail Bennett were frustrated buying gas here with their Australian
credit because they we don't have a five digit zip codes; we have four digit
post codes. They had to leave their credit cards in the stations and they
weren't comfortable with that.
The day they left I took them down to Galveston and they bought the gas. I
told them to enter "00000" when the pump asked for a credit card. IT WORKED!
Their comment "NOW YOU TELL US!"
