2 years back my ice maker "stipped a gear". I bought a nice new smaller one. Before we got home I noticed it is only making 2 cubes on the two closest pegs to the right. The water is cold through out but the other 12 pegs are not freezing. Any ideas? I know nothing about this stuff. If the freon was low would it cause this? Why only 2 pegs freeze is beyond me. Can I add freon to the thing?
So, I dragged out my old larger one today. Took the cover off and removed the motor. The roll pin had broken where it fit into the tray "tipper". Easy fix and I have my old 4 year old large ice maker going again. I really liked the smaller one for the coach.
Anyone got a clue? I hate to spend another 150 bux just for a small one to leave in the coach.
Thanks,
Dan

Dan,

It sure sounds like it is lacking cooling and being charge short is a real possibility. It could also be that the condenser has collected stuff and is not cooling. This could be the shell of the unit, and if it is dirty or stuck someplace it doesn't get enough air, that can do it - too.

If it is charge short, adding refrigerant can be a short term fix. The charge on those miniature is in the 25~50 gram region and if you loose even a very few, the cooling about quits. It has leaked once and will still be leaking and you will never find where the leak is from my experience.

It isn't worth taking it to a shop. They will probably not be able to look at it for less than the price of a new replacement.

If you have a local vo-tect HS or CC, you might offer it to them. They may offer to recharge it at nominal cost or may like to have it as a demonstrator.

If it isn't R-22, get a piercing access fitting and blow in a little HC-12a and then keep letting some out a little at a time until it cools right.

Good Luck Guy

Matt
