I am getting ready to make my trip to retieve the 76 Birch and I need a little help.
It has 2 12volt batteries up front on the passenger side next to the motor, in a line, front and back. I did not see a battery for the ONAN and I do not think there is room for one in the ONAN compartment.
I will have to replace all batteries.
Which battery is for the engine and which is for the house?
What size 12 Volt do I need for the engine?
I want to replace the 12 volt house battery with 2 deep cycle 6 volt golf cart batteries. What size should I get?
For the ONAN what size 12 volt battery should I get?
Can someone point me to where the ONAN battery might be located?

Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

If any one in the San Antonio area or the Harlingen area wants to go along on this adventure, please contact me.

1. Birchavens do not have a separate Onan battery. They have a long cable running from one corner of the coach to the opposite corner to start the Onan. Before you trust the cable too much you might want to inspect how Coachman routed it... you might be surprised.

2. The batteries could be in ether spot. But the engine battery will be connected to the engine. (Just follow the cable to the boost solenoid and then see which one goes to the starter.) The other battery would be the house battery... connected to the cable running to the Onan through a circuit breaker.

3. A rule of thumb for all my batteries... I put in the biggest battery that will fit in the hole! I haven't put a pair of 6v in a Birch for a house battery... but it shouldn't be that hard to do. You just need a triple battery tray. (Home-made or check our vendors.)

4. When retrieving a coach first concentrate on the items you need to drive the coach safely down the road. You can disconnect anything you do not need... or understand. (Take pictures before you disconnect.) You can take your time and figure out and reconnect things later... when you are at home! I found some interesting PO added stuff in my 77. I took a lot of wire out of it before driving it home... still haven't hooked up the house systems. But I am using the 78.

Good luck... if you have an outboard boat tank, take it with you. Twisted Evil

Ted and Mike

Thank both of you for responding. I do plan on using 2 T 105 6 volt deep cycle golf cart batteries for the house instead of the 1 12 volt that is in it now. Do either of you know the size/group number for the 12 volt engine battery. It has an aluminum battery tray that will hold 3 batteries.

I hope to resurect this coach this coming Thursday.

Bob,
It really doesn't matter what the size/group rating is really, just
get the biggest battery you can say 800/900 CCA battery and install
it. In this case higher rating is good.
