Hello everyone. I hear this is a pretty active, friendly, and
knowledble bunch of folks.
I've been a member of the Poncho (Pontiac) mailing list for ten
years... any of y'all here, too?
Anyway, a 1977 Palm Beach has been sitting inside a metal building
since 1991. I am going to look at it today. The back four wheels have
been stolen or are otherwise missing. Ran when parked, interior rough
but not trashed, etc. $1,500. I go to look at it today at 4.
(Hrm, occurrs to me that the current owner might even be on here.)
From what I can tell, the guy is practically giving it away. I've seen
these GMCs sell online with fire damage for a few thousand dollars.
If I buy it, I'm going to need to find wheels so it can be towed to
the shop for belts/hoses/whatever else needs fixing after 20 years of
sitting.
I have access to a junkyard. Am I right in that there are a ton of
front wheels off GM dually pickups that will fit? I'm looking for the
cheapest possible way to get her rolling (under her own power or not).
If the guy will let me keep her in his metal building until I can get
"proper" Alcoa 16"s, then it's not as big an issue. I don't know if
he's in a hurry to get it gone.
Anyone have thoughts, suggestions, advice?

I'm sure there are people that have old wheels with tire that will
give them to you.
Tell me where you live and see if we can locate some for you.

$1500 does, indeed, sound like a good price if it is anything at all however at that price it sounds like you are going to get a "project" - no problem if you are so inclined and are looking for a good hobby.
Re the wheels. Seems like we hear regularly here that folks have original wheels and tires that they would love to give to someone who could use them. I had a set of 6 that I advertised for free tires but only if they took the wheels too.
Good luck. You will find the folks here to be very helpful.

Yes, definitely a project. I've been working on my 1968 Pontiac
Catalina for about 10 years now, so I'm familiar with jumping in over
my head and learning on the fly. :)
I am in Jackson, Mississippi. Don't suppose anyone from
Memphis/Biloxi/Baton Rouge/Meridian MS (N/S/W/E) has some freebie
originals with tires that will at least let me tow her away if I buy
her? The plan is to definitely get Alcoa 16s, so I hate to spend money
on wheels and tires that are just temporary.

Robin,
Two suggestions up front.
Either change to a real name or put it in your profile so we know we have a real person to contact.
Put your geographic location either in your profile or your sig file (like mine and many others). This way, if someone can and wants to help, he knows immediately if it is practical.
Many owners have some old steel 16.5s around that they will lend, but they have to know where you are before they even offer. There are almost no junkyard wheels that will fit. If you can find those from a 78-87 C3500 dually, that is about it and they are few and far between.
Count on all the rubber parts being shot. Like belts and hoses and particularly the fuel hoses will have to be replaced.
Come back with the TZE (under the right side hood) and tell us Dave may have a list of prior owners and someone probably knows how well maintained the coach was (or not).

Looking at a map of the "Black List", It looks like you are in the center of a hole in the south.

Check out the list... I only did a quick look. You might find someone that can help you out. (As a whole GMC'ers are a helpful bunch.)
With tire life (in our application) of five or six years, I certainly would try an avoid putting new tires on "a project." You only NEED good tires when it is rolling down the road on them. It can sit on old tires.
Welcome aboard.... even if you do not buy THIS one.

Welcome to the GMCnet.
$1500 may or may not be a good price. You might be money ahead to consider a coach that is in better condition with less future $ outlay required.
As for loaner wheels/tires -- I can commit only one, but there are others in the Memphis area who may be able to help. Note, in some cases if you "borrow" them they may not let you bring them back!
Just a little too far for a quick drive over to help -- but let me know if you need anything.

If you are not able to buy, borrow, or steal (excuse the pun) some steel wheels, these are a much less expensive alternative to Alcoas:

I have them on the rear of my coach and have had people tell me they thought they were Alcoas at first glance. Jim K. also sells a hub centered version of this wheel with a slightly smaller center hole. In my opinion, the less expensive lug centered wheels work just as well.

With the steel wheels and tires, just be sure to have a large enough vehicle to fit them all. You won't believe how heavy 6 steel wheels and tires are untill you move six of them!

Robin,
I went through Jackson, MS last week on a work trip in Vicksburg, MS. I
have six OEM steel wheels, but no tires.
You are welcome to them. I am 30 minutes east of Memphis.
Don't forget, there is always GMCEX Freight. Sometimes if you ask nicely
you can get hooked up with someone traveling through or near your area and
they will deliver them to you - or close to you.

Visiting another GMC'er (and his coach) can go a long way to reduce the learning curve when starting with GMC's. Even better if they can visit you and your coach... The only thing better than that would be to visit a rally... with your coach.
Old tires are a good cost effective way of being able to roll around a project coach and keeping it off the ground.
BUT... Keep in mind that older tires are not reliable* for anything more than SLOW and SHORT trips. They have been known to come apart and cause more damage to the fiberglass than new tires would have cost.... or this coach costs!
*Age is only one of many causes of tire failure. Abuse, non-use, sunlight and ozone can "kill" tires well before their time. For example: I tossed 5 year old tires, with only about 2000 miles on them, due to sitting in the Utah sun, not used, for all of their lives. I installed 6 year old tires that had been taken care of.

Welcome to the group - I hope you find a gem! I bought my coach site unseen in Ohio and I live in California. Take that advice to replace all the rubber goods, hoses, fuel lines, belts first. Then you'll have to grab a couple of batteries. If you are as lucky as I was you'll be on the road in no time!
My coach was just a days drive away from an expert GMC Shop where I had it made safe for travel - all of the above plus new brakes and lines. I bought new 16.5" tires for the steel wheels as I didn't know that my Wife would love the coach as much as I do. It was the right decision at the time, but I wish I'd bought some of Jim K's Eagle wheels and 16" tires.
I don't know what kind of support you get from the Pontiac group but this one is very active, mostly friendly, and always willing to help. Hey - our coaches were built in Pontiac, MI, so it's kindred to the Pontiacs at least!
Please post pictures and don't forget the serial number "TZE" number for the registry.
