Gord,

Sorry, close but no cigar!

The 455 has ten valve cover bolts; 5 across the top five across the bottom.

The 403 has 5; three across the top and two across the bottom.

Hmmm.... might want to have this picture pulled and Dick Paterson's note removed then?

5 bolts or 3 bolts _ON AN EDGE_ of the valve cover. Double that number if you wish to count the whole valve cover. But unless you are taking the cover off, why would you want to do that?

Gord,

Douh! First of all I screwed up!

This statement is correct:

The 455 has ten valve cover bolts; 5 across the top five across the bottom.

Here is a picture of a 455 valve cover:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=28551

This statement is incorrect:

The 403 has 5; three across the top and two across the bottom.

It should read:

The 403 has 6; three across the top and three across the bottom.

I have no bloody idea how I came up with five, I haven't had anything to
drink; YET!

The picture is correct; it is talking about the number of screws across the
edge. Which is either 5 or 3 depending on the engine. Ten for the 455 and
six for the 403.

Rob M.

No worries mate - I didn't have a clue until I saw the picture and it stuck in my head as such a simple and quick method to spot one from another. I guess to that point we're lucky GM didn't choose to build all with 4 "per edge".
