Getting ready to refinish the roof on my recently purchased 77 Royale and have removed the crank up portion from the roof. I am in the process of isolating and repairing all roof leaks and was thinking of removing the base from the roof and welding up the hole. Is there any need for that crank up antenna anymore or is everything satelite and cable???

That antenna will work just fine for over the air HD stations if you are camped anywhere near a town.

Its huge and ugly (not to mention the interior part of the crank mechanism
is badly damaged). Is there a smaller more modern design out there that will
get local tv without having such a large foot print?

Sully,
Be cautious -- the ceiling is insulated with flammable material -- so I would NOT recommend you weld on the roof.

The whole interior is gutted. I plan on removing the insulation in that area
and then re-foam .It would have to be plated from the inside and then
contoured on the exterior. I would like to get rid of the rediculous whip FM
antenna as well.

What about those small, swept back boomerang type antennas you used to see on the rear trunks of limos? I have one that I hooked up to a HDTV, and it seems to work fine here in Chicagoland. I've never tried it away from town, so I'm not sure what the range is like.
I also replaced the large roof radio antenna with a short one that JimB got me. Looks a lot better and seems to work fine.

Opps... noticed that the item numbers do not match... but that is what the site pops up when you put in "your" item number.
For what it is worth, It is hard to beat a crank-up batwing antenna without paying quite a bit more. Sure the bat wing has some drawbacks... like you should not use it "in motion" and it does need a hole in the roof.
I plan on installing a directional Wifi antenna on mine... just to increase the odds of picking up "free" networks when stopped for lunch and the like.
But if you still do not like the bat wing... Google "rv tv antenna". I understand Winegard makes good antennas.

Dan,
I've never heard of doing that. Special with your subscription, or comes
with any direct TV installation?
