I recently moved my Palm Beach to Texas (got 10.5 mpg once I got out of the mountains!). I've come back to Washington State to move my household goods and have bought a second A/C unit. One isn't enough for the hot Texas sun. Does anyone know if the rear vent is pre-wired for an A/C unit or do I need to run a wire to the breaker panel? The breaker panel has two half breakers for the existing front unit. Not sure what that means. Has anyone done this? I currently have a Fantastic vent in the rear so the original hole has been enlarged. Will this be an issue? Anything else I need to know? I got a 13.5K btu Duotherm that looks much like the original.

Lance, The a/c takes the standard 14" opening so it should work well with you new unit, if there are not obstructions like a pod or bathroom vent that take up the same real estate. Mine came with a rear air so I don't know if it is pre-wired. I doubt if it is as the rear air on mine was wired with smaller wire than the front since it had an 11000 btu unit. It wasn't a problem changing out to 12 gauge wire.

The 'GMC Classics' are having a rally next month in New Braunsfels and a summer rally in OK in July. I would invite you to our rallys and welcome you as a member.

Thanks John,

I'll definately attend the rally in New Braunsfels but will be busy getting settled in so shoot me a reminder. See you there. Anyone else know if the rear vent is pre-wired or how to get a 12ga wire from the vent to the breaker box without ripping out a bunch of panels? Also, do I need to add a breaker?

When I first bought my 75 Palm Beach, it had the old(nonworking) AC in the rear hole, which I replaced with a nice, new Fantastic Vent. The rear AC was fed power by a Romax cable that was tapped off the overhead outlet in the hall just forward of the rear AC.

I don't know if that was standard or had been retrofitted by the previous owner. Since the wires were fed from the screw terminals of the outlet plug itself (a no-no in electrical codes), I suspect it was done after the coach left the factory.

My '78 is factory wired for rear A/C and the circuit breaker is located at the lower right hand corner of the panel. Your '75 may be different.
