Continued towards Patterson and per Ken Burton's advise, I phoned C.Boyd who knows columns. Darn, he isn't coming to rally.
I wanted to know if a new key switch could be installed into a column without the Kabuke dance that I subsequently witnessed, in tearing apart the column.
Chuck referred me to John Sharpe who told me, no, the column needs a 'colomnscopy'.
So armed with a new key switch and being in a safe place, at the park, and close to an O'Reilly's, he brought his copious tools and dug in, [including a wheel puller and a spring reliever.].

Took off the steering wheel, horn wiring, the stems, flasher knob, and bottom wiring and at some point said ---Ah ha!
BROKEN RACK. It's a fragile die cast member. But gettable. It is the item that the key switch with lil plastic gear connects with to pull a rod to make a switch to feed power to the lower neutral safety switch thence to the starter solenoid [sounds like Rube Goldberg].

So a few phone calls later, quite a few, we located a store that had one.
They likely ALL have one if they have a HELP board.

It happens to be a frequent seller [due to car thieves] and is as follows:

Dorman common part number 83211 Cost $10.00 Lots of common usage.

Had to drive to Morgan City, about 5 miles E. so we looked for some wheels; Ken Henderson kindly loaned John his Honda and we got one fast.
John installed it inspite of my looking over his shoulder and VOILA', it now starts sans hot wiring. Took maybe 30 minutes.

Plus I learned how to steal a car.
And I have a new, in box, key switch to save.

SO after all this, I am publicly thanking Good guys Emory S., Gene F., Ken B. and Ken H.
and especially John Sharpe who gave up ~3 hours to help me out. He is one talented 'wrench spinner'.

Guys like this can't be bought for any money

George,

I concur. The information and the manner in which it is freely given is the main reason my wife and I decided to go the GMC route.

I am preparing for my first rally and am gobsmacked (a great british term from my wife) at the amount of help that has been offered. It is really not possible to thank the members enough.

If you think this is something, be a member of this group and have a REAL problem on the road!!

This is something I truly hope that I have have to take any advantage of, but the feeling of security I have know what support is there is very comforting. (Kind of like knowing that the Coast Guard will see your red flare.)
