I ran across this custom GMC at the government liquidation website. It looks like it has a lot of interesting upgrades: modern 454 engine, updated front bodywork, rear door, and I'm wondering what kind of hubs and running gear it has to be running the type of wheels it has.

That is not a GMC.

I believe it is a Revcon or a Silver Motor Coach.... I know I have seen pictures....

The Silver Motor Coach had some neat design ideas/features.....

- Front headlights and side turn signal lamps were nice

- The Dash is similar to the new model offered by Mac Dash

http://www.custominstrumentpanels.com/2010%20Spring%20Rally%20ES%20023.jpg

- PANTOGRAPH WIPERS !! I've been looking into these for a long time, would
love to have them, makes total sense !!

- 28', 30', 32', and 34' models. I think a 28 would be ideal.

- Interesting air bag design, shows that it shouldn't be too hard to find an
OEM bag system from the existing market at a competitive price.

- Spec sheet on the last page says Fuel Injection.

Fun stuff to look at !!!

I'd hazard a guess that the Revcons were owned by
the local military recreation services facility
and were rented out to military service members.
Ususally they just had tents, cots, sleeping bags,
coolers, camp stoves, etc. to rent out.

I think it more likely they were instrumentation vans for Redstone. I've
never seen motor homes rented by a recreation facility -- too much cost and
maintenance. And they surely would not have been held this long.

It is difficult to speculate on, or interpret the folly our goverment is capable of.

Some MWR facilities do rent motorhomes. Fort Eustis in Virginia used to.

Whether they were MWR or some kind of command vehicle, the age is not a surprise. Disposing of government property is an enormous PITA.

You only have to put it off until the end of your tour and then it's someone elses problem.

I do hope someone local to the area can inspect them for us, i'm curious.

Its a 454 TBI Big Block Chevrolet that is in that Silver Motor Home, time for a new prescription Jim?

Cool info that those Revcons may have been used as instrument carriers on the Redstone Missle programme, they would make great vintage race car transporters with some work IMO.

Wow - I wonder how many Silver's exist? Are they such close cousins that they rate for Dave's Registry? It's not a TZE, though, is it.

I don't recall what the set up was. Was it rear wheel drive or a front
wheel with a trans that used only the front output of the trans?
Can someone refresh my memory?

(I wonder how many Silver's exist? )

I believe there were only about 3 or 4 built. I believe at least 1 was purchased by Uncle Sam. Originally the co. was M R ? it was just a small GMC repair shop in Costa Mesa Ca off Harbor blvd. just south of the 405. The owner Bob had grand visions of building bigger better GMC's. The last time I went there for parts in 92 I think they had pretty much stopped repairing GMC's and his GMC mechanics were building around a 32 ft Silver coach in the small shop. Bob seemed a little tense at the time probably cause every one was working on the 32 footer and no GMC repairs generating income. I don't know how Revcon got involved. Too bad they didn't just stay a GMC repair shop as they did good work. The last time I went there I was told they went bust.

I understand it was a 4 wheel drive transmission and transfer case converted to front wheel drive only. The "flight deck" or maybe just the step was extended into the living area to provide room. ALSO... The engine looks to sit higher in the coach... no flat floor on these!

I use to be a supply Sargent and the company supply officer. I use to hate having to send stuff to the PDO (Property Disposal Office). Old ammunition was the worse. It was a real PITA. We use to go shoot it off and throw grenades so I would not have to go through the paperwork and transport problems. It was much easier to say it was just expended. Vehicles were the second worse items to handle.
