Ken Henderson has an a/c compressor I can buy. It has the wrong pulley on it, serpentene. I need to swap my clutch with his so I can use it. Does anyone coming to Patterson have a puller that I can borrow to swap these things? I need to do it while I have help from Ken Burton.
Thanks,
Dan

Dan: been many years since I pulled a GM compressor clutch, but somehow it sticks in my mind that all you need is a corse thread bolt that screws into the front of the clutch and it pops right off. Now, I may be out to lunch on that, but I had this corse thread bolt in my toolbox for many years for some reason....lol.

I looked and looked and looked for mine and did not find it. I did find everything else we need.

The Autozone loaner is a metric one. Unfortunately it will not fit our clutches. Been there, done that. I finally ended up buying one from Pep Boys which I now can not find. I think I loaned it out to someone a year or two ago.

Hopefully someone will have one.

I've got a fairly small refrigerator compressor I use as a vacuum pump. Do
you need me to bring it also? I know, HC12A doesn't "require" system
evacuation; but, I still do it for leak check and hopefully improved
performance.

The folks that say you don't need to evacuate the system don't live in southeast Texas or Louisiana. It's humid. The dehumidifier in the GMC fills up all the time down here by the coast. Vacuum the system in LA = Good Idea! I'll check my tools later to see if I have one.

Dan, Lanny should have one around there. Ask Billy to let you snoop around in the tools. She may want to sell some of them too!

Dan and Ken,

One of mu local Autozones had the correct puller. It took several tries to locate it because it was about the first in the numerical series, but they did have it and it worked.

Dan

Here are the tools you need to do the job and as of last September you could borrow most from Autozone -- except for the one used to install the clutch.

Are you planning to change the bearing while you have it apart?

I have always recommended evacuation with a vacuum pump even if you
are using HC12a (Duracool).

If you have positive pressure and are certain that air has never
entered the system you can get by without doing it but it is much
smarter to evacuate.

Dan,

I still haven't heard whether you need my vacuum pump or have an
alternative. We're leaving tomorrow morning for Patterson with a full load.
Let me know ASAP if I need to find a niche for the pump.

I already packed mine. So we will not need yours. We still need a tool to remove the clutch from Dan's existing compressor and also form yours. Yours is probably metric but Dan's old one is not.

Ken B,

Autozone still shows the tools I used from their loaner program last September -- they had the removal tool, and puller -- but not the correct tool for reinstalling the clutch plate.

Here are the photos and tool numbers again.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5593

The closest Autozone to Patterson may be six miles.

Ken B. & Dan,

Thanks for letting me off the hook on the vac. pump. :-)

We won't arrive at Patterson until Friday. We've got a visit scheduled in
Pace, FL (Pensacola) tomorrow night and plan to move to Keesler AFB on
Thursday so we can arrive at Patterson early on Friday.

Thanks Ken. I am glad to have help on this deal.
I attended air traffic control school at Keesler. Have not been on that base since. I enjoyed my time there.

Dan-- I never heard the conclusion on the AC failure. I assumed it was a bent pushrod from slugging liquid-any details??
