I got it home(sort of). It's not in it's parking spot, but I'll put it there when it cools off. I'm not sure, but I think I found a symptom that's pointing me in a different direction. When it quit this time, I popped the hatch & removed the air cleaner. I realized that there was a lot of gas vapor coming out of the vent & the carb was too hot to touch. I believe that the thermo valve on the driver side manifold may be stuck closed or partially closed & the crossover in the intake has never been blocked off. I don't believe the carb ever needs to be that hot.I'll probably take the thermo valve off the manifold & cut the valve out that is stuck. It isn't needed, anyway. Then, I'll have to find someone to pull the intake for me since I'm in no shape to do it myself. I also plan to install the insulator gasket then. Not a good situation, but at least it's back home now. I'll also find a carb rebuilder if there's any left alive anymore.
Looks like another summer without the coach, since I have way more time than money & money is what it's gonna take right now. I did install an electric fuel pump, but it's pushing thru the mechanical pump right now. I plan on either replacing the mechanical pump or removing it & running off the electric.
Just goes to show that I'm gonna need to spend closer to the $15k before it's dependable. Eventually it seems inevitable that I'll have to drop the tanks sooner rather than later.

It might not be an expensive fix. And you'll back up and running. Maybe just some Kroil or PB blaster and some elbow grease to turn the heat riser into the open position. It will probably be so sticky it will then be stuck open. Perfect. It could also be a collapsed muffler on one side and not the heat riser valve at all. This is if you have the stock Y after the 2 mufflers. The resitriced side then forces the exhaust from that bank of 4 cylinders over to the other muffler through the intake crossover, overheating the intake and carb. Jim K is big on noting this failure mode as it can be a fooler and hard to diagnose, yet a simple problem. Carbs are often "rebuilt" unnecessarily when all they might need is a vacuum pulloff or a piece of vacuum hose or an adjustment or tightening. Other than the shaft getting sloppy on the primary side, they don't really "break" per se., and that takes lots of miles to wear out. Best luck.

There shouldn't be a heat riser valve on a GMC. Sounds like you have the wrong manifold on there.

never seen a thermosatic valve on a gmc exhaust manifold.....must be off of a passenger car....
sounds like you intake manifold is cracked in the exhaust crossover area.......this will actually cause the carb to work loose or warp from the excessive heat............block off the crossover, get a good local carb guy to recondition the carb, then tune and time the automatic choke system, and last fab(home depot/lowes) a warm air air cleaner preheat system.........you will never miss the intake heat riser....

Richard,
Do you have two mufflers and are you pretty sure one is not plugged? They tell me if one is plugged or partially plugged, the exhaust will cross over and then go out the other side.

That is a distinct possibility, but I can't get under there to find out safely. I do know that there are 2 mufflers, but their condition is uncertain. I can't make it go far enough to take it anywhere & I seriously doubt that any of the shops around Lindale have either a pit or a lift big enough to do the job. I have been planning to either replace the stockers with either turbo mufflers or glass-packs anyway. If anyone on the road thinks my pipes are too loud, they need to back off anyway. God help 'em if I had a Thermo-san, but it's for the best that I don't, I guess. I'd be way too tempted to "gas" a tailgater, and if what came out of the pipe wasn't quite burned yet, so much the better. I despise tailgaters anyway.
If they get replaced right now, it's up to me to do it. I may just need to dig a ditch under it. I plan on getting a set of intake gaskets & making a set of block-off plates first. At any rate, if it don't solve the problem, it needs doing anyway. Turkey trays are only good for tacking to a tree & using for target practice, anyway.

Any GMC/CHEV dealer that services their
larger trucks should have lifts that can
safely lift the GMC coach.
The same goes for Ford or Dodge truck
service places if you can talk them
into it.
It's also possible that an exhaust/muffler
shop might be able to replace mufflers.

Exhaust system can be done without a lift. Some excessive language might be used, but I did it, and so can you. Just have someone help to manage the long pipe down the side. Suggest that you use ss bands, instead of old style muffler clamps. Put it together, without tightening, then tighten when the mechanical alignment is to your satisfaction.
P.S. Be sure that, using original cast iron manifolds, that you use the bolts and springs, just like GM did. Otherwise, you will have problems later.
If you cannot find a local replacement, L. Harrison makes a nice replacement.

I also did mine on the ground. I welded a lot of it and also used the band clamps on some of the joints.

I'm going to straddle a dip in the driveway to get some extra work room. With the bags aired up & jackstanded, that should provide enough room. This is gonna be a "Quick & Dirty" fix. I'm installing glasspacks for the time being($19.99 + tax each). The old ones are welded, but I'll use a pipe cutter just on the muffler side of the welds, then clamp them on. I seriously doubt I'll be driving it that far when repairs are finished.I may need a new intake manifold, but I'll try block-off plates to start out. Finances being what they are, I gotta make every dollar count. No money for updating anything right now, just get her running & keep her stock. Chances are that the longest trip it'll ever take is 100 miles one way. It's going to be years before I can reasonably contemplate anything farther. Upgrades are for those who can afford them right now...
