I figured I'd ask the list what they use for dish or direct tv on their gmc
coach. With me actively looking for one, I figure I'd ask as the dish is
probably in the top ten of stuff to do. I am either going to get a dome
type, or just use the house style risk I have now ( I have dish network)

Sam, I got tired of using the tripod so I bought a dish for the roof. I crank it up and spin it. 30 seconds will normally get me lined up. I have a digital elevation meter inside.
Never had any problems with the portable setup and still carry one behind the couch. I used to install c band satellite dishes many moons ago. Just so much handier to have one on the roof. We use Directv so we need to only look at one bird.

I use a ground based tripod made out of 1" pvc it is just a "T" with a piece
sticking up in the middle to mount the antenna on. Just sit it on the
ground and point at the satellite, no big deal. I think I have the plans
around some where if you want the e-mail me.

I have used a Satalite dish almost as long as I have owned an RV.

I have Direct TV and I do not have a separate receiver for the RV.

I pull the receiver from the house, the time of the shows remains as the time at home so if you go to a zone change, the shows become early or late, depending on where you are.

Most of my travel included a tripod. I now have an automatic locating unit that is supposed to be mounted on the roof. The problem with the roof is if you park amoungst the trees, you have to be in a pretty good spot for the antenna to find a "hole" in the leaves to see the satelite.

My unit is pretty small, with the flat square antenna so I place it on the ground and let the auto locator do its job. If I can't find it, I move it and try again. It has never failed yet.

If you do not get the automatic design, a tripod and a dish will work. Get the little meter that connects in the coax for locating signal. It is the best thing.

If you cannot find the meter, have your receiver set to the signal screen and have someone tell you if you have signal or not. It is way better to be able to hear if you have signal ( DSS ) but it gets un-nerving to anyone inside that has to listen to the tones.

If you can store the dish and tripod on the rear of the GMC, all the better, it takes a lot of space to store the dish INSIDE the MotorHome.
