I have used a Satalite dish almost as long as I have owned an RV.
I have Direct TV and I do not have a separate receiver for the RV.
I pull the receiver from the house, the time of the shows remains as the time at home so if you go to a zone change, the shows become early or late, depending on where you are.
Most of my travel included a tripod. I now have an automatic locating unit that is supposed to be mounted on the roof. The problem with the roof is if you park amoungst the trees, you have to be in a pretty good spot for the antenna to find a "hole" in the leaves to see the satelite.
My unit is pretty small, with the flat square antenna so I place it on the ground and let the auto locator do its job. If I can't find it, I move it and try again. It has never failed yet.
If you do not get the automatic design, a tripod and a dish will work. Get the little meter that connects in the coax for locating signal. It is the best thing.
If you cannot find the meter, have your receiver set to the signal screen and have someone tell you if you have signal or not. It is way better to be able to hear if you have signal ( DSS ) but it gets un-nerving to anyone inside that has to listen to the tones.
If you can store the dish and tripod on the rear of the GMC, all the better, it takes a lot of space to store the dish INSIDE the MotorHome.
