The GMC Motorhome has an outstanding provinance, the design, styling, engineering & endurance has few if any peers. When I was a new owner I was most impressed by the large variety of GMC MH related "stuff". Very likely many of you are not aware of the extent of these originally available items, so I thought a quick list might be of interest:
HotWheel GMC MHs - >70 versions (continuation to present)
Rubber pencil erasers - 5 colors (replication the 73-74 colors)
Barbie motorhomes - 3 versions
Hess Training van
GMC MH by Zylmex - 2 different models (similar to HotWheels)
Fiberglass 1/16 model - several
Frisbees - 2 versions
Embroidered patches - 10 (many others by GMC MH Chapters)
Stickers - 2
Belt buckles - 5 versions
Decks of playing cards - 3 versions
pens - 3 versions
Match books - 3 versions
Key fobs - several
Cups & glasses
Packet of coffee
fly swatter
Kite
Camera
Clothing, hats, caps, jackets, shirts, etc
Publications - many, many, e.g., 50 different Sales brochures, 50 different magazine ads, etc, etc.

There is much more but I said this was a quick list :^)
Nearly all of these items were sponsored by GMC and available during the 1973 - 1978 period.
Many of these items were given away at GMC sponsored rallies or by GMC MH dealers .
While I have nearly all of the above items, the problem is , I have enjoyed them for years & what do I do with them now?

Bill,
Not unlike any great collection -- it takes a lot to amass and then you hate to see it parted out -- but sometimes that happens and the parts go to those who only want to focus on a specific area or only want a limited item to enchance their own hobby.
Finding a good venue for future owners to see and enjoy what you have accumulated might be very difficult.
Would the GMCMI be interested in acquiring the collection and displaying it all or in part at the conventions?

I really would like to see a collection like this. Hopefully it will stay together. I really think International, or one of the other clubs should buy it if you are ready to send it on. I'm willing to contribute a small amount and I'm sure enough other members would be as well. it doesn't need to be displayed at every convention, but maybe once in a while plus a nice photo inventory on the club website would be a great addition for the money.

Bill, I have always considered you to be the "official" GMC historian. Or possibly "unofficial" but either way you are the man. I agree with the others who have suggested that you not break up the collection.
My suggestion is that GMCMI appoint someone to the position of "GMC Motorhome Historian" when and if you decide that you no longer want to continue in that capacity. At that time your inventory could be transferred by sale or donation to GMCMI in that persons care.
The new GMCMI historian would then be responsible for not only maintaining the artifacts but also displaying at least parts of the collection at GMCMI rallies.

I seem to remember someone saving a transmode that had been a mobile jewellery store display. I can not think of a more appropriate place to display "GMC Motorhome collectable stuff."
GMCMI Mobile Museum?
Possible but might have to jump through a few "hoops."

You would also have to come up with a financing plan for moving your museum from rally to rally. That might be $4000 or more each year just for the gasolline plus tires, maintenance, etc.
Plus someone's time to drive it.

Whoa...... time for a reality check.
Thanks for the feedback, appreciate your thoughts. With the list of items I hoped to stur interest in others that might like to collect GMC memorabilia also. At some point I will definitely have to make the decission on what to do with my collection, but it is not immediate. Allow me to also provide some more details on some past activities.
During the 1990s I had presented seminars on collectables & memorabilia at 3 GMCMI Seminars.
At the Delaware GMCMI Convention I had a room just for display of the collection. Brought a ton of stuff and appeared to be of considerable interest to many people.
At DuQuoin, IL I brought a smaller display, seemed to be of interest to some.
For the past several years I have provided Historical info for the bulletin boards at the GMCMI conventions sourced form my collectables.
At each (1973-78) years 25th anniversary, provided copies of sales literature & other info for the bulletin boards from the collection.
So....I have made use of the collectables and have shared with the membership.
On the way to DuQuoin last Fall we stopped by the RV Museum at Elkhart,IN to check out their new displays I hadn't seen a couple of years prior. While looking at the 1974 GMC on display I noticed there was an EMPTY display case right next to the GMC. I went to the front desk and asked why it couldn't be used to display GMC collectables (there is one full of Winnebago stuff near the Winnebago display). I offered them enough GMC collectables right then to fill the display case, for free! Got turned down and had the feeling their primary interest was in the products made by companies still in business & supported the museums financial needs better than the GMC.

Disappointing but I'll get over it :^(

Bill,
I had the good fortune to attend the Delaware GMCMI Convention and saw the
items you brought; in the vernacular of the current generation it was
"AWESOME!"
I wonder if the RV Museum in Elkhart would be amenable to accept your GMC
items if the GMC community chipped in and provided a display case?
There's a fair few skilled people that have done some amazing work on their
GMC interiors and I'll bet they could make a display case pretty easily.
I would be more than happy to contribute to that cause.

Rob, I don't know if you have read that the museum will probably be closing due to lack of funds.

Last I heard they had about 2 months worth of working capital and then it would be shut down if a new source of funds is not found. Apparently they need 40K a month to keep the lights on and the place maintained and on 50K visitors a year, without significant industry support, it just can't foot the bills.
I remember the original discussion about where to locate it and understood the draw of building it in an RV industry heavy area, plus I think the land was donated, but I still think it would have been a better idea to locate somewhere in the South where it might have been a snowbird destination or at least a year round attraction for RVers. Elkhart just isn't a camping destination during the winter months.
Oh well, no worse than some other museums that struggle with the economy.

They could have located it in Cleveland on the edge of the lake since the
R&R museum is there. It's a wonderful place in the winter for Alaskans
heading to Philadelphia for the winter. Hah.
Jeremy, if you had been around to suggest a sunnier location I'm sure they
would have given it a second thought. I know your suggestion makes sense to
me. However, the northern part of Indiana was trying to put together a
driving tour of automobile museums. The problem with the effort was that
everything is separated by a more than a few miles. Had someone given it
some greater thought and put together a cooperative effort (egos getting out
of the way), the museum could have made it.
Closing it seems to be a waste of the collection. I can't imagine it taking
that kind of money to keep it open. It sounds like some mismanagement or
poor judgment has been involved.

It looks like Marcus Lemonis, Chairman of Camping World is stepping up and helping to keep the museum going.

It looks like Marcus Lemonis, Chairman of Camping World is stepping up and helping to keep the museum going.
Here is a link to the blog from just a couple of days ago by Nick Russel, a friend of Al Hesselbart, the museum historian. No comment about Camping World et al staying solvent.

I had seen this posting. The conditions are pretty stiff, but beggars can't be choosers. Hopefully the museum will pull through and there are worse things than having a camping world store attached and a "good sam" welcome hall. As I've said before, I believe Camping World and Good Sam will survive, though I'd worry about most of the publications the parent company produces.
