After having the engine rebuilt we turned on the dash air. It sounds like a machine gun going off. The compressor hung for a couple of weeks while the engine was out. It was not exactly upside down but it was not hung up in the same direction as it sits on the engine. The first time we turned it on it was a "small" knock. I turned it off. We thought it was hitting the floor. We moved it around a little but it was not hitting the floor. It really hammers loud now. I can not turn it on as I don't know what is about to go flying through the floor. Any ideas?

Dan,
The maintenance manual mentions "false compressor lock up" -- a state that can occur after a compressor sits idle for some time. The remedy is to put a drive socket on the compressor shaft and rock it back and forth until the compressor rotates smoothly.
I realize that in your case the compressor may not be completely locked up -- but if it were me, that is what I would do. At least I would know if the compressor would rotate before I tried to apply engine power to it again.

Dan,
No, engine off. Use an extension on your socket to reach into the front of the compressor clutch and attach to the compressor shaft. Now you can attempt to rotate the compressor -- if it does not move -- try rocking the socket back and forth.

You may have had a hydraulic lock with oil. Although there's a high pressure blow-off, it can't handle a liguid lock. However, if that happened, it probably would have been loud right from the start. When the system was opened up and later recharged, do you have any idea if oil was lost from the system? If it is opened up slowly, you won't lose much oil, but if it was opened up quickly, a lot of oil will escape with the refrigerant. I suspect the compressor is toast, but let's see what other folks come up with.

Use a thin wall socket -- in the same place this photo shows the clutch removal tool -- the nut that holds the clutch plate to the shaft is located there. Use the socket and see if you can rotate the compressor.
If the compressor rotates smoothly -- may be a little stiff -- then the compressor may not be your problem..

I don't believe Dan's air conditioning system was disconnected during his engine replacement. The compressor was just hung to one side and the system stayed closed.

Dan,
Like "Sargent Shultz", I know nothing...about that type of AC compressor. However, I asked my mechanic friend about it this morning and he said that type of compressor has oil in it "all the time" and having it hang at an angle shouldn't have affected it. Maybe just a weird coincidence that it died right after the work was done.

Dan I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if the sound you are hearing is coming from inside the compressor I would say there is a good chance that it has a broken rod. Since you didn't add any refrigerant or oil to it it shouldn't be slugging oil or refrigerant. It is possible the expansion valve is stuck open but I doubt it unless the suction line is iced up while you have it turned on with the engine running. If it is noisy with the engine idling it is most likely broken internal parts (rod,piston). If you try to rotate the compressor crankshaft by hand with the engine off you will likely feel or hear the broken part.

Yup--I'm pretty sure it slugged liquid (freon or oil or both)and just like an engine, it broke or bent a rod.
