I'm new a new GMC owner, so hello to everyone first of all!

I bought my 1976 Palm Beach last Summer and have slowly been trying to learn all about it and fixing it up. I'm in the process of replacing the carpet and headliner and thought now would be a good time to reupholster the bunk-bed bench seat and dinette since they have been taken out. I got a quote to reupholster professionally but it was absolutely crazy (more then brand new seats). I just wondering if anyone has tried to do this themselves and how difficult it it.

Thanks,

Pete

How good are you at sewing and how good do you want it to look? My wife re-did our upholstery when we first got the GMC. She hadn't sewed in quite a few years and while the results were OK, she wasn't happy with it. We also didn't use very good fabric, and it faded very quickly.

Recently she used much better fabric, and had a lot more recent practice, and made removable slip covers. They look very good, are washable, and work really well given we have a toddler, a large dog, and a parrot usually making a mess on the upholstery. As good as they look, there is a definite difference between a professional and my wife, but we are quite happy with ours.

When we originally redid them, we also bought all new foam, primed and painted the frames, and inserted some thin support between the foam and the old springs. Our seats are much stiffer and more comfortable for us these days.

Thanks,

I had all the cushions redone at our state prison. They have quite the reupholstery shop. You might want to check out your state. You bring them the upholstery of your choice and the couches and cushions and they do everything else. About two weeks later they were done. I paid about $200 to have the Bunk Bed couch, 4 dinnette cushions, the 2 couches out back and the long bumper behind them done. They did a very professional job. My wife pointed out that they lined up the fabric at all the joints (she's very picky) and was very pleased.

I love the State Prison idea. I had my mustang body fixed and totally repainted at the prison in Moberly. I waited for a good body man to come through. My ex-wife had tangled with a potato chip truck, while her car was in the same prison getting 4th gear put back in the tranny.
Welcome Pete.

Marsha, the trade school for the Mo. inmates is located in Moberly. Get it over there and you can get work done. It cost me 25 dollars labor to get my Mustang beat out and painted. Even got it done on credit. The body man I had work on mine was an old timer from St. Joe that had slipped up and sold coke to the wrong guy.

Thanks for the suggestion, For anyone who has the information. I'm about to

Rob I got off topic but I would not let them paint my GMC. I would never have let them paint my Mustang but I worked there and the cons all wanted to impress the Parole Officer. They saw me as the key to the gate.

My GMC friend kept his original uphostery but replaced the foam--I couldn't believe how much better it looked. The uphostery was hardly worn at all but the collapsed and dried out foam made it look worn out. I may consider doing that with my still original stuff.

Gary,
I have both Honda seats and JB's pleather. The seats are a darker tint.
But my wife and daughters all say I have no fashion sense. If it's
critical I can have them give an opinion.

You can go to any good auto upholstery shop and ask them if they can match
the color using the "DeLeo" samples book. You may even be able to do it
from DeLeo direct. Almost all leather seats now have "leather seating
surfacs" only. Meaning the backs sides and gussets are made in matching
vinyl. I'm not sure about the Jags, Bentleys, Rolls etc.

I have early DeLeo books but nothing since the late 1990's

We recovered the dinnette and side panels a couple of years ago and replaced the foam. It took quite a while to do but it turned out OK. I don't remember how many yards. We also raised them up 1 1/2". Here are some links that have some yardage info.

Gary,
Well we went to our driveway and inside the coach to compare after we met our daughter, sil and grandson for dinner. Trying to keep the inspector in a good mood. The pleather we have is a light color, "ivory" says my wife. The Honda seats are beige.

Have you asked JB for a sample to compare? I don't remember the name of the pleather we have. I can send a sample of what we have but you'd be better off getting a sample from JB.

By the way my wife says it's a nice contrasting color set but, ivory pleather is too light for seats. She's a pre-school toddler teacher and thinks in terms of what kids will do.

Wally, is that an inverter underneath the dinette seat?

George, we have the ivory pleather on our captains chairs. And while it looks great, I agree with your wife--I'm just waiting for the day when our toddler decides to take a pen to them.
