I'm new a new GMC owner, so hello to everyone first of all!
I bought my 1976 Palm Beach last Summer and have slowly been trying to learn all about it and fixing it up. I'm in the process of replacing the carpet and headliner and thought now would be a good time to reupholster the bunk-bed bench seat and dinette since they have been taken out. I got a quote to reupholster professionally but it was absolutely crazy (more then brand new seats). I just wondering if anyone has tried to do this themselves and how difficult it it.
Thanks,
Pete

How good are you at sewing and how good do you want it to look? My wife re-did our upholstery when we first got the GMC. She hadn't sewed in quite a few years and while the results were OK, she wasn't happy with it. We also didn't use very good fabric, and it faded very quickly.
Recently she used much better fabric, and had a lot more recent practice, and made removable slip covers. They look very good, are washable, and work really well given we have a toddler, a large dog, and a parrot usually making a mess on the upholstery. As good as they look, there is a definite difference between a professional and my wife, but we are quite happy with ours.
When we originally redid them, we also bought all new foam, primed and painted the frames, and inserted some thin support between the foam and the old springs. Our seats are much stiffer and more comfortable for us these days.
Thanks,

My ex-wife had tangled with a potato chip truck, while her car was in the same prison getting 4th gear put back in the tranny.
Welcome Pete.

My GMC friend kept his original uphostery but replaced the foam--I couldn't believe how much better it looked. The uphostery was hardly worn at all but the collapsed and dried out foam made it look worn out. I may consider doing that with my still original stuff.

Has anyone checked with Jim B. to see if his pleather is close in color to the tan Honda seats?

Wally, is that an inverter underneath the dinette seat?
George, we have the ivory pleather on our captains chairs. And while it looks great, I agree with your wife--I'm just waiting for the day when our toddler decides to take a pen to them.
