I'm going to soon be replacing the water pump on my engine. Does anyone know of a set of photos covering this job? I searched the photo site and didn't find any.

If there is one available I'd like to see it and if not I'll take lots of photos and post my experiences.

Thanks guys. These links will be helpful. Now I have a much better idea what to look forward to. I know that replacing a water pump is no big deal but a bit of a heads-up on what to expect is helpful.

I've done this job on several Olds engines and although it is straight forward, it's a pain in the ... Lot's of stuff has to come off first and many of the fasteners are different sizes. As Rick D pointed out a while ago, make sure you use the correct gasket (hopefully the one that came with the new pump) and thoroughly clean off the timing cover which forms the rear of the water pump cavity. It's a lousy design as far as I'm concerned.

This last time that I replaced a GMC motorhome water pump (which was a few years ago), the pump actually came with three gaskets. Each was a little different. Apparently the same pump is used on different GM engines. One gasket would have left an opening to outside the engine and that would have poured water out. Another would have partially blocked one of the ports.
So it is very important to dry fit the gasket to the pump and check to see that it covers in all places but does not cover any openings that should be there and then do the same with the block.

Well, I went out and removed mine today. The thing has a seal leaking and anti-freeze is coming out of the center drain/vent hole. It is not a big job if you have the split fan shroud.

1. Get the shroud out of the way In my case it was remove the bottom 1/2 of the shroud. If you do not a split shroud, now is the time to get one from Jim K. or Bert and Faye.
2. Remove the fan clutch with the fan still attached.
3. Remove the fan belts.
4. Remove the pulley on the water pump.
5. Drain the radiator.
6. Remove the lower radiator hose from the coolant pump.
7. Remove the two heater hoses from the top of the pump.
8. Remove power steering pump and it's mounting bracket.
9. Remove the bracket going to the AC compressor.
10. Remove the 8 bolts holding the pump from the front of the engine. Some of the bolts are studs. You might want to memorize which holes they go back in to.

Reverse the above procedure and you are done.

I'm not happy. This is the second time I have had the center seal leak after a few years of use. I discussed this with Blaine and he thinks that the seals are binding or sticking to the shaft after being parked all winter. Then the first time I spin the pump in the spring the seal gets ripped. I do not know the fix to this problem but this time I'm going to try so water pump lubricant in the coolant.

I agree with Bob, stupid design. such a pain in the ass that I was in no mood to take photos. It is pretty straightforward, It was my first water pump save for a 3.0 chrysler V6, and was easy as pie. Take your time, Use good gasket sealer, pay attention to the gaskets and the holes on the pump. There are several versions. You may want to do the timing set and fuel pump while you are in there...

I have not done much wrenching lately as our guys frown on me showing
them up as to how I can do it without making a mess.
I prefer working from the top.
I pre glue the gasket on the pump and use bolts at left and right to
hang the pump .
I prefer to use the socket end screw drivers for the hose clamps .
I lean the fan and clutch against the radiator as it stays out of the way.

We went through a period arguments re water pump impeller size and what the impeller was made of. I've always felt that only bearing and seal design was worth arguing about. All the rest was meaningless.
