G'day,
Awhile back I published a Steering Check procedure which Byron Songer
captured, polished up, and posted on the Eastern States GMC website.
When I wrote this I used the Maintenance Manual, Parts Book, and some other
references.
I did not "validate" the procedure on a GMC, it was just meant as a
guideline.
Steve Ferguson and Jim K noted that their experience showed checking the tie
rod ends as I had done might not find worn tie rod ends unless they were
severely worn.
I am planning on flying back to the USA to attend the Dixielanders Bean
Station Rally.
I would like to validate the procedure in general and see exactly what can
be determined by the procedure vis-à-vis the tie rod ends.
If anybody is having problems with their steering I would like to pull their
GMC on Al's pit and use it to validate the procedure.
Regards,
Rob M.

Rob: At Dillard GMCES rally this weekend Ken Henderson did a seminar on wheel alignment basics. He had 3 tie rod ends that were sent without description. One was good, one was bad and and the tnird was in pieces. Ken said he would get more info. I am hoping He will do the excellent presentation at Bean Station. One thing We did discuss was the height of the grease zerk as a wear indicator....... more to come, hopefully at Bean Station.

Thanks for the "...excellent presentation..." comment, Chuck.
Fact is, I didn't really give a presentation; rather, we had a discussion of
wheel alignment. The audience members mostly had as much or more knowledge
than I did. I merely moderated and showed some jigs I've made to measure
the alignment parameters. Rob and I used those last summer to successfully
align my X-Birch.
Steve, we merely presumed that on of the un-opened tie rod ends you sent to
Byron was acceptable and the other bad -- twisting them around seemed to
reveal some binding in one that was not apparent in the other. The
disassembled one was interesting to most of us, who had never opened one. A
big question in everyone's mind was, "What's that screw beside the Zerk
for?" Hope you're here & will clarify and answer for us.

Ken et al,
I guess we'll try the procedure on every coach that goes on (over?) the pit
and see what we find.
