I visited with Ken this evening on the phone. He thought they were about ready to take off. He has a tracker in the coach he is driving back east. N9kb-11. Take a look when you can. Right now he is just south of Salinas on 101. He will head over 46 to Bakersfield and then up the Tehachapes and into Barstow. This was not his route of choice but he is trying to miss bad weather. 101 south is a good route and so is 46. Teri and I took it this summer and loved the drive.
So, keep your eyes on Ken. He is driving someone else's coach, as he so often does. His daughter is with him so they may both drive and make good time.

Gene, he called and asked me, of all people. I told him how much Teri and I enjoyed 101 and crossing over where there were no big climbs, you can relate. Anyway, he said that was his route tonight so off they went. You could have given him another route while you were there with him.

Ken was to take the 152 East to Interstate 5, but missed it.
They will cut across at Passoroblis.

I just called and got Ken out of bed. He and Heather spent the night in the noisiest truckstop we have ever slept in. The Flying J just north of Bakersfield on 99. Of course it did not bother Ken, can't hear, but Heather heard all of the traffic.
So, if you want to watch and see if he makes it over the Tehacahapis, look at the tracker in an hour or so, N9kb-11.
The only problem last night was windshield wiper and the leaks in the rain.

Started moving today at approximately 12:03:21 CDT
which is today's first position report. Last speed
was 61 mph headed east from Bakersfield on CA 58.

Well, he is over the Tehachapis. That is a good sign the coach will make it. That is a long tuff climb.

I wonder if they stopped to look at the Tehacapi Loop!

I Googled on the loop and found the marker at the
overlook point. That is one place that is on just about
every railfan's bucket list!

Had my second GMC driving lesson today between Barstow and Needles; however that only lasted about 15 miles. The wind came out from hiding behind the mountains and gave me a good lesson on steering a coach in the wind. Had to pull over and have my dad drive so I could calm myself down. We are currently in the parking lot of Cracker Barrel in Kingman, Arizona. Thank you Cracker Barrel for the great food and the use of your WiFi!

That's a challenging second lesson! Good experience though. Bet
you're enjoying it all and I hope your third lesson is a bit milder
and a lot longer. Say hi to Dad...

Randy and Margie Van Winkle are in the process of
getting that same high wind driving experience!

Judy and I met them at an IHOP about 25 miles
east of Oklahoma City (Shawnee) for breakfast.

They were going to be heading for home about 1100
CDT and the wind is blowing at a pretty good cllip
from the south and will surely impact them as they
drive east on I-40.

It was bad enough in our Explorer as we headed home
back west on I-40! We saw a fellow in a Jeep towing
what was probably a 28' travel trailer westbound
and he was unable to keep it in the driving lane.
I was glad to get by him, for sure.

12 noon cst. Just talked with Ken and Heather. They have trash in the filter of one tank. One will pump gas the other won't. He is in Autozone getting stuff so he can blow back through the line of the one what is clogged. Still in Kingman.

Hope he doesn't have to go the "outboard boat tank method."

Mac,

Enjoyed breakfast with you and Judy. The wind was strong but didn't affect us in the GMC too much. We are in Joplin which is about 60 miles from home so should be there in about an hour. Maybe we will see you again sometime...
