Are there three bolts holding the adapter onto the block for the oil cooler lines, 455? I have had a leak on this trip and it blew around on the right side, passenger's side. I can find nothing leaking but keep having a drip on the oil filter. I can not really see the adapter good but did find 3 bolts. They were loose. I snugged them back up hoping to stop the drip. Oil on the starter but none on the cooler lines, then blows back onto the torsion bar. I can't tell how bad because of the blowing of it backwards. There is no visable leaks anywhere that I can see but drips off the filter. I recall John saying he had to retighten one of the lines going into the adapter but now wonder if he just did not snug these bolts enough or they have come loose like headers and tappet covers do.
Thanks,
Dan,

Dan, it sounds to me like the through fitting that the filter screws onto
might be loose which would allow the oil cooler adaptor to leak between the
adaptor and the casting that bolts to the block. I think it has a hex shank
that you can tighten with a crescent wrench. You have to unscrew the filter
to check. Another quick check is to grab ahold of the cooler lines and try
to turn the adaptor. If it moves easily, there is your problem. I think
there is a similar oil filter o ring there also that sometimes leaks.

Dan,
Just checked the Parts Book 78Z Group 8 Engine and it references Group 8.031
Filter - Oil there is NO Group 8.031 in my Parts Book. It goes from Group
8.027 on page 8-15 to Group 8.041 on page 8-16. Looks like a GM goof!
I did find Group 8.009 FILTER - OIL which lists two p/n 9427321 and one p/n
433114 as BOLT - oil filter to block.
It lists a p/n 389942 as GASKET - oil filter to block (w/413610, 416542,
417794, 418694 engine).
I then went to the Maintenance Manual X-7525 and on page 6A-26 Engine I
found Figure 4 - Oil Filter. It shows the "OIL FILTER BASE" held to the
engine block with three bolts. It does not show a gasket between the adapter
and the block which doesn't make sense in light of the Parts Book info
above.
It does show the gasket between the oil cooler adapter and the engine block
adapter which IIRC is the same size as the gasket in the oil filter.
You might want to consider getting a gasket to go between the oil filter
adapter and the block and as well as one to go between the oil cooler
adapter and the engine block adapter.
Take everything off the engine and start over using a good sealant on the
gasket between the oil filter adapter and engine block. According to the MM
Torque Specifications:
Oil Filter Element to Base - 20 ft. lb.
Oil Filter Assembly to Cylinder Block Bolts - 35 ft. lb.
Oil Filter Extension Fitting - 55 ft. lb.
Whatever you do DON'T use one of those crappy Harbor Freight torque
wrenches! ;-)
Just thought of something if you don't have the Parts Book or Maintenance
Manual I'll bet Billie does!

Bob Drewes posted these pics of adapters.

Three bolts to block.
|
Dan;
Make sure the gasket from the filter adapter to the block is the correct gasket, the 455 & 403 are different. (see Wallys post from above) Clean the block surface squeaky clean and the adapter the same, put a light layer of Permatex #2 on the gasket and let it air dry a bit, and bolt it up.
The oil cooler adapter to the adapter on the engine block takes a filter gasket, take one off the filter you are replacing. It takes a 1-1/4" socket for the adapter nut assy.
Good luck and take care from Bob Drewes in SESD

I just had the same problem. Replaced both gaskets. I got the gasket from Jim K and the other off a Fram oil filter. I also discovered that (in my case) after I put on the adapter to block gasket it still leaked. The problem was that the 3 bolts were at least two different lengths and a PO got them mixed up. The longer, and misplaced bolt, bottomed out before it clamped the adapter down. This may have been the problem all along. I sure don't remember which bolt was which at this point, but you can test before you bolt up.

Dan,
Just checked the Parts Book for you here's what it notes about the bolts.
2 9427321 BOLT oil filter to block (3/8-16 X 1) (300M)
1 433114 BOLT oil filter to block
According to this there should be two different lengths of bolt. If you
REALLY want to be pedantic you can play musical bolts and stick them through
the adapter until you see they all stick out the same amount! ;-)
I have NO idea what (300M) means!

Thanks Jack. Good information. I bet the center bolt, that goes through the
thicker part of the adapter, is a bit longer. I am hoping when I tightened
up the three that stopped the leak. Will run the front end up on a curb or
something tomorrow so I can get a good look at everything while changing the
oil and filter.
