Amazing what the market forces of higher dollar oil combined with political pressure of mandated higher fleet MPGs can force our companies to produce. I know instantaneous start/stop is not a new concept, but it is nice to see GM at least believing that this kind of technology will be appreciated in American markets. I just wish they weren't trying to prove it with what has essentially become a niche domestic brand. Perhaps it won't be long before this technology starts to show up in Chevrolet branded vehicles...

To make this GMC appropriate, perhaps in a few years it WILL become cost effective to install a direct fuel injection system. Of course we'll have to add on a whole new starter system, but I have faith in the great minds in this community. Although we spend a lot of time at highway speeds, I do cringe a bit when sitting at traffic lights watching my gas gauge drop!

You will see this on a lot more GM cars than just the Buick. It's an updated design based on the earlier mild hybrid GM cars. A lot of the economy gains come from more than just the stop/start part of it. Although it looks a bit crude compared to "full" hybrid designs, it gives a lot of bang for the buck.

Jeremy and Bob,,,,,Gm has had this technology for several years. It been avalable in a hybrid truck. Only in extended cab, thay put a bunch of batteries under the rear seat. It uses a diffrent starter to eleminate the gears and teeth. The starter/generator is attached to the flywheel and doubles as a generator. I don't remember the voltage but its around 50-60. Could be more. Outlets in the bed and inside(120 volts). Shuts off at stoplites. ,,,,,PL

The truck system is a totally different animal. The E-assist is belt driven off the crank and is a very minimal but effective approach. The truck ssytem is a full hybrid and much more expensive.
