Looking for Balancing Beads to use in my new Cooper SRM II Tires.
There are several brands available, to name a few, Equal, Counteract and Dyna Bead. I understand there is also a powder as well as BB's.
What have you folks used, your experience with the product?
recommendations, where to purchase.

I have equal. Ken H. has Counteract. I also put the put plastic air gun beads in my trailer tires. All seem to work equally well. John Shotwell also has the plastic beads in his GMC. If you with those they are around $10.00 per bottle in the sporting goods department at Walmart. I believe it takes 4 oz per tire on a GMC size tire. I had the trailer tires mounted at Walmart and the tire guy had some beads left over from another install so he gave me them for free. I bought him lunch at Walmart just to make it an even trade.
I'm not much help am I?

Richard,
I've been running 4 oz of Counteract in each of the GMC tires for about 8
years. I don't even use the filtered valve stems. I've never found a tire
dealer who knew what "balancing beads" are so I've always ordered it off of
eBay.

Ken H,Ken B et al,
Last week I took the coach to Discount Tire to have the tires rotated and rebalanced. I asked the young tech about their experience with balancing beads; he didn't know what I was talking about.
Perhaps the dealers are trained to be "dumb" by the companies that sell balancing machines and weights.
Have any of you gentlemen ever put a wheel with beads installed on a dynamic balancing machine? If so, how did the machine read it?
It would be interesting to check an unbalanced wheel and then recheck after installing the beads.

I use dynabeads in my wheels. When I did research on the beads, I read that you cannot put the wheels on a dynamic balancing machine and get an accurate reading. A couple of reasons: 1) The machine does not spin the wheel fast enough long enough for the beads to "find their location", and 2) For the beads to distribute properly, they rely on the normal jostling of tire as you go down the road. They don't "take a balance" until around 35 to 40 mph IIRC.

Randy,
That was the point of my question. If you can't "measure" the effect of the beads how do we know the balance is any better with the beads?
I like the idea of the beads but the price of a tire at Discount includes life time rotation,re-balancing and flat repair.

I'm not sure there is much difference between a good balance with the machine and the beads. However, I sometimes have trouble getting the tire jockies to not put weights on the outside of my AE Alloy wheels. If they use stick-on weights then that is OK.

You can tell how well the beads work by how smooth the run going down the road. They also eliminate the need for those ugly wheel weights.
While it doesn't do anything for fixing flats, with my Airsoft beads, I get "life-time" re-balancing each time I drive the coach...

I use Dyna beads and are smoother than any dynamic balanced tire I've had, in fact that was the reason for trying the Dyna beads, I had a tire that the tire shop could not get balanced to my satisfaction. Beaded tires can not be dynamically balanced as the tire needs to be in contact with the ground see http://www.innovativebalancing.com/HowItWorks.htm The beads not only balance the tire and wheel but the entire rotating assembly, hub, axle, rotor etc. I like the comment that every time you drive you get a new lifetime balance job.
Another benefit is you remove all the existing lead weights which cleans up the look. I'm sold as they are in all my cars now and none of them have any external weights.

I believe most tire shops that work with big trucks are familiar with these balancing beads - trucks have used these for 20 years or more. Many truckers won't run a truck without them.
A few years back we had a flat and got two tires replaced in Lebanon, MO at Value Tire Center. They service trucks, busses, cars. They said they run through about 500 tires per week, and they were familiar with Equal, and put it in the replacement tires. And they had 16.5 inch tires - on the shelf.

I remember several years back when I picked up my Alcoas from Southwest Wheel and then went to a local Goodyear tire dealer to have my G159 tires installed that while there a trucker with a large diesel tractor dropped a large bag on the counter and said that he wanted 8 golf balls installed inside each of his tires.
The clerk said that they commonly did that for the truckers and that they seemed to work quite well for the big truckers. Just a large scale of "balancing beads".
