80MM Brake Calipers [message #118287]

Do the 80 MM brake calipers make enough of a difference to justify the extra cost of the lines bolts and higher price of the calipers? I will be towing and launching a pair of seadoos so light towing. I guess I am asking if you can notice the difference in braking power with an otherwise stock system. I am going to replace both calipers and pads on the front anyway so will be buying them one way or the other. Thanks for any insight.

It seems to me it would help; the cost is a wash since you should probably replace the hoses anyway. However, Jim Bounds will not supply hoses and thinks this is a bad modification. Apparently he knows something about this 'upgrade' so why not give him a call at the coop.

many of our vendors are unwilling to install non-OEM equipment for
insurance reasons.

many of us make changes "because we can"
disk brakes
non dot-parking brakes
etc,

so often decisions are made for financial risk reasons, not for performance
reasons.

Hi,
I installed 80mm calipers on the front and and then stainless brake lines on
all 6 wheels on my 23. I think the brake lines did more than the calipers.
Better pedal feel for sure. If you think your regular rubber brake lines are
OEM you might consider changing them out as they do deteriorate over time.

I was taking a trip to Alaska and doing the mountains out west last summer. I installed the 80mm calipers from Jim K and lines, then put singed metallic pads in front and singed metallic linings in the rear after cutting the drums. WOW ! the brakes were much better then stock and did not fade going down the big hills. Did not change the master cylinder.

If you are doing the front brakes you should upgrade tot he 80mm calipers. The cost is the same and you WILL be replacing the lines anyway.

'will' as in they most certainly need to be replaced.

I put them on my GMC and yes they help. Make sure you get good pads as the 'lifetime' pads do not stop well...

That link is a bit misleading. The first item to appear is Dave Mumert's
explanation of the FACT that braking force is independent of PAD area. He
happened to mention an 80 mm caliper in that example. But the caliper
piston size (the 80 mm) has nothing to do with that explanation. If you
follow the link to Dave's spreadsheet and check the braking force applied by
a 70 mm caliper, you'll find that it's only 6000 pounds of force, vs the
7800 pounds with an 80 mm caliper.

The 80 mm caliper will definitely provide more braking force.

I have a Hubler front end kit plus rear disk kit with the P30 MC coming.
From what I've read, what I gain with the bigger caliper pistons, I lose with the larger P30 MC.

I'm hoping the the larger diameter front disks will make up a bit for that.

Well I bit the bullet and went to o reilly and got the 80MM brake calipers hoses pads and bolts. they had it all in stock. Much nicer then having to wait for the original equipment stuff. Got the left side on this morning Will let you know how it stops when i get the other side done. thanks for all the information.

this is probubly the point

the 80 mm stuff is in-stock and easy to get
the 70 mm calipers in new-old-stock, and is not in stock in most parts
houses

since the front brakes have a separate piston and reservoir, this should not
require a master cyl. change.
