I would like to replace my steering wheel with one from a GMC Safari van or pick up.

Which model years will work. I have seen this info on the net in the past but I can't find it now.

Thanks for your help.

I think it is any year before air bags.
Look at Grant steering wheels also. They have some nice walnut ones.

I too need to change the steering wheel.

I don't want anything new. Just a cheap one
from the junk yard.

What is the best way to go about finding one?

Thanks!

Richard,
The wheel on my coach is black 4 spoke from a chevy suburban or pick up. It is like new and you are welcome to it for free when I find a replacement. You can change the horn button to a gmc one if you like..
The only reason I'm changing again is the lower spokes block the view of my after market guages mounted in the skirt below the steering column.

I have seen the astro or safari mini van wheels that have only a single horizintal spoke just below the center horn button. I hope to find one at the wrecking yard here in Red Bluff. If I don't find one here I'll come and look in Chico.

Let me know if you want the wheel I'm taking off. The price is right.

Richard/Gene,
I have the "single horizontal spoke" one that Gene mentions and I really like it, as it does a good job of not blocking the view of guages. Mine came from a mid-80's Chevy Astro, as that was the nicest one at the U-Pick it. I then rooted around there for a GMC center cap, which are less popular, but often interchange across different types of wheels. Best part was the price at a whopping $7, all in.

One thing, went back with a new steering wheel puller to get one for a friend, and the bolts that came with my Craftsmen puller were too short to work. So, need to hit the hardware store for longer bolts and go for a hunt again when the spring thaw comes. If you want, I can try and hunt one down for you as well, but the shipping will cost more than the wheel, so better if you can find a local U-Pick it.

Normally you do not "NEED" a puller.

You loosen the center nut quite a bit... but do not remove it. Then grab one side pull and push, move to the other side... push and pull... move to the top... ect... When you feel a little slop, put your hands on the opposite sides of the wheel and pull up. The wheel will eventually pop off the shaft. When it comes loose it will smack the center nut... and remind you why you left it on the shaft.

Once you get the "trick" down, it takes less time than using the puller. (I would not do this on any steering column that I thought would be used again.) This trick is also a good workout. Twisted Evil

Before pulling a wheel. check how firm the "outer grip" is on the wheel, it gets loose on top first.

I'll second that! Not only is the product great, but the man behind it is a first class GMC owner:

The horizontal spoke one comes off of an Chevy S-10 or GMC S-15 pick up truck. They are $5 to $20 in most junk yards. I paid $10 for mine. Look around for a center cap the says GMC. I got my wheel off of a Chevy S-10 and the center cap off of a different GMC S-15 in the same trip. If I remember correctly a new center cap from the dealer was only around $10.00. I bought one once several years ago for another GMCer and put it the mail to Canada.

I painted my original wheel with vinyl paint and covered it with one of those stretch on leather (real leather) covers. looks pretty good and is nice and thick like a modern wheel now.

I got the cover at pep boys.

Rob,
That is the wheel that I have now except mine has a Chevy horn button. The lower spokes obstruct the sight line to my after market guages mounted in the skirt below the steering column.

It works fine for viewing the OEM speedo and guage cluster.

Richard, that is the wheel I am changing. If you want it it's yours. It looks so good the price just went up. Now I want a pale ale at the Seirra Nevada brewrey. Cheap at twice the price.

If you happen to come across another of the one you

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=37992&title=a-grainy-shot-of-my-reimagined-steering-wheel&cat=3625

Eventually I want a four spoke wheel cuz I like to hold the wheel where that center spoke goes.

Chris,
See my post to Bukzin about the wheels I saw today. I have taken off my black Chevy 4 spoke wheel and Richard doesn't want it.

You're welcome to it. However you can probably find plenty available in your area and if you're lucky you can get one with a GMC horn button.

If you wannt mine, it may fit in a USPS flat rate box for shipping.

Gene, thanks for the offer. I'm good for now. I had two different Chevy trucks with that wheel, however. it is a good one.

Does it have the cruise stuff in the wheel and if so, 'easy' to hook up?

Yes Sir it has the cruise buttons, but the Eldo I got it off of was wrecked and the column was trashed. All I took was the wheel. The wiring thru the column I did not get. I have the Caddy column in mine and liked the wheel cause of the low cross bar and the telescopic unlock lever is under the bottom. I now have 3 cruise switches. 1 on the steering wheel, 1 on the end of the turn signal lever for late model cruise when I install it and the stock button which use to be the turn signal lever till I modified it to fit the tilt lever position. I still have the stock cruise control.
