To those of you who have used an "Eraser Wheel" to remove the stripes and glue, which one did you use? I bought a mid-priced one and it sucks. Leaves more of itself behind with piled up glue.

Chemicals seem to work better...

Chris, Jerry Wheeler has erased some stipes this winter. Maybe he will chime in and let you know how he did it. He is on the road somewhere in Az. I won't sware to this but I think Topeka Graphics sand them off.

As I may as well. I wet sanded them off the front Pax side of my coach, and it was a lot faster.

Get the 3M wheels and then wipe the surface with WD-40 to clean the residue.
Then soap and water.

Thanks

If you are talking about the adhesive applied stripes, a heat gun and a
scraper will do the job. It is best to round the corners of the scraper and
sand the edges so they are smooth. Heat the stripe until the adhesive
releases and slide the scraper held as flat against the surface as you can
under the stripe. Once you can get ahold of the end of the thing, pull it
back against itself while heating it carefully, heat gun in one hand, stripe
in the other and scraper in the other. Wait, that is three hands. You need a
helper to pull steady pressure on the stripe while you heat and scrape. Use
3M adhesive remover to take the residual adhesive that remains. If your
stripes are painted on, mask off the stripes with plastic masking and test
a sample area with easy off oven cleaner. If your coach still has the
original Imron paint, it should not hurt it if it has not been sanded. Do
not leave the oven cleaner on very long, as soon as the stripes start to
dissolve, clean them off with enamel reducer, and neutralize the oven
cleaner with white vinegar. Wear gloves and a respirator as well as safety
glasses. Third option is to use a dual action sander and sand them off and
repaint. The responsibility is yours for testing a very small area to make
sure that you do not damage the Imron paint. I have removed painted on signs
from a number of vehicles this way with good success. Your results may vary.

That is what I used on my SOB. Very rapid removal but leaves behind the
glue residue.

The glues are a problem but I have had good luck using kerosene or any lamp oil and paper towels to get the glue off. not a big mess and does not seem to hurt the paint, of course you probably don't care about the paint. Look close and you will see the original paint color under the stripe Very Happy

Get the biggest wheel you can and go slowly. My stripes took about a week to remove and my drill owes me nothing. GOing fast is counter-productive as the reheated and cooled stripe residues are just as difficult to remove as the originals.

I tried my wife's embossing heat gun and it didn't work. I tried chemicals and they took off more than I wanted. I tried blades and ended up with small gouges. The wheel worked best but it was fractions of an inch at a time with a wheel that was very slowly turning.

I really wish I had a means of turning down the top speed of the drill to something like 100RPM so that I couldn't accidently let it slip and spin too fast briefly. Accidents like that were what cost me a perfect set of Painted Desert Stripes under the one ones the PO had installed. Crying or Very Sad

I'm probably going to use chemistry, as it worked best and fastest. then orbit sand with find grit. I'm saving $$$ by doing some of this prep work myself.

The wheel seems to make more mess with redepositing, and at any slower speeds, it doesn't work at all.

I saw several types, so some probably work better than others. these things are made for removing the two little 1/8" pinstripes that dealerships install, not 6" wide strips of glue.

You guys wouldn't believe the crap I found under the rubber strip on one side. liquid nails, rtv, other unknown glues, and of course double sided sitcky tape. what a mess... most of it was bonded better to the paint then the paint was bonded to the coach.

There is a new eraser wheel on the block.
http://www.beacongraphics.com/supplies/tools/vinyl-remover.html
I've also seen a new type of eraser wheel with teeth on the face.

I created a faster solution:

CMR

Chemical Mechanical Removal...

I use "professional strength" (Whatever that means) Goof off in a gallon can to soften the glue, then a good stainless steel scraper with no sharp corners to remove it. Then I follow with a rubdown with more goof off. I cleared about 3 ft of the crap in less than 20 min.

Basically I soften about 6x6 area with a saturated paper towel, then when the glue is soft, before the chemical evaporates, I scrape. It comes right off. While I am scraping one area, I am holding the saturated towel over the next section. after about 3 or 4 sections, I go over it all with a fresh towel and remove the residuals. That takes a bit of elbow grease, but less work than anything else, and no gouges like a heat gun and a razor blade give.

I have not tried it on the full stripe yet, just the glue left behind after I removed it with the heat gun and scraper. This may be a two-step process.

I wasted $24 on that stupid pink wheel...

On trucks and trailers when we sell them we have to remove the names. The decals are rather large like 1'X4'. We use the 3M wheels at high speed and very light pressure. Too much pressure and you soften or burn the paint. takes about 30 min to remove one of the large decals. lots of dust though and a mask is a real good idea.

I know I'm late adding a comment here, but, be sure to get the correct 3M
adhesive remover. The stronger one will dull and possibly remove the paint.
The milder one is used to remove the vinyl strips and it's adhesive.
Originally developed to remove the simulated wood grained as found on the
Mopar Town & Country mini vans and wagons.
