While doing this Pertronix upgrade I thought I'd tear into The Beast a
ways and find my oil leak. Oil filter adapter was leaking and that
"could" have been all of it. But it wouldn't have been the way to bet.

Had it torn down this far and carefully cleaned all the gunk off. Yes -
there was foamy cleaner and water used but care taken not to get
anything electrical wet.

After I got the Pertronix working I had the Onan running for a while.
Well... there's still a leak.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showfull.php?photo=37975

I assume that's called a "front cover" and that I'll need to pull it off
and regasket it. Where does one get an Onan Front Cover gasket kit?

Kelvin,
Check the oil pressure sender. That's where my leak was. Only saw it leak when the Onann was running.

The one place that wasn't leaking. No oil on or near the sender.

Kelvin,

Did you check the tension (torque) of all the involved fasteners?
If no, then do that before you take anything apart.

It has been a while since I had my BF torn down to there and I think is was to replace the front seal. I just tapped out a replacement. The original was just flat paper. So, I just got some nitrile paper (having worked for a gasket company, I have some stock)I stuck it to the cover with RTV (IIRC). Any oil service gasket paper will work. If you have never used a small hammer to make a gasket, here is your chance to learn the skill.

In addition there are 2 fiber gaskets used on the oil filter adapter. You need to loosen the motor mount support that the adapter mounts to. The gasket is under that support.

That was one of the things covered in a small engines class I took as a freshman in high school. Good to know and I have used the concept on Onan generators and F-4 fighter jets!

I normally use REAL gasket material, but this video shows the idea:

Google gives you many other ways... and substitute materials.

Yup. I took the adaptor off and made a gasket to mount that to the
motor mount support. I didn't replace the gasket between the mount and
the engine. That probably would have been a really good idea but I seem
to have gotten away with one. No leaks from that area.

I took Matt C. advice and tightened up all the bolts on the front cover.
May have fixed the problem there, too.

All back together and I've run it for 15 minutes or so. No leaks that I
can see. Not going to call it fixed yet but it'll do for now.

Thanks,
Kelvin

My father taught me to make my own gaskets when I was 8-10 years old. Funny how smart folks are, especially our dads.

Dan,
You are so right! Unfortunately it takes 20 or so years to figure out our dad's were a lot smarter than we thought. Glad I finally did, and payed lots of attention after that.
