There has been a couple of inverter threads so I though I would toss this out as another alternative. I realize this is another topic that has lots of opinions, so don't flame me over this.

We have used a number of these Tripplite Inverter/Chargers with built in transfer switch at remote tower sites to power commercial and Municipal radio commuications systems during power outages and as a backup to generators.

Its basically like a UPS with an external battery so it uses your house battery.

I see they have RV versions as well, I have only used the General Purpose units. Follow the links on the right hand side on this page:
http://www.tripplite.com/en/products/power-inverters-chargers.cfm

I like them because
- they have a fast 3-stage charger
- I can put a large battery of my liking on it
- Built-in transfer switch
- available in either plug-in or hard-wire.
- can handle 150% overload for upto one hour and 200% overload for 10 seconds.

I have posted several messages on this forum through the years recommending that one should install a combination inverter/charger, rather than separate units, because of the built in transfer switch Bruce mentioned. That switch will turn off the inverter output any time there is 120 volts available from shore power or the genset.

Consider this: The microwave is usually the highest load connected to the inverter, If you are using a separate inverter it will ALWAYS operate from the inverter. Both the charger and the inverter will be operating at a high rate, and the charger won't be able to charge the batteries as fast as the inverter is using up the power. And that gets pretty inefficient.

Well, that is my short version of the sermon, so I hope it makes some sense.
