Gene,

Since this isn't really about GMC's I'll drive it a bit further OT.

The highly polished airstreams reminded me of the C-97 that was based at
Westover AFB in Chicopee Falls, MA when I was based there '64 - 67. It
"belonged" to Eighth Air Force HQ.

It had been polished so many times that the aluminum cowlings were so thin
the aluminum skin would pop in and out when you pushed on it!

When I was in USAF Navigator Training School at Harlingen, TX
back in 1961-1962, one of the T-29 training aircraft was also
highly polished. The tail number ended in 1111. The plane was
known as Four Aces and was mostly used as a "personal" plane
for the commander of the training school. It was only occasionally
used for training flights and seemed to always have problems
when flown; probably from lack of use!

Most aircraft do not like sitting for long... Sounds like a GMC! Getting closer to being back on topic.

Mac,

I THINK I envy your memory. No way I'd recall any detail of any T-29 from
58-59 when I was at Harlingen.

No, maybe I don't envy you: I might have a more acute remembrance of
standing in line outside the kitchen waiting for breakfast while swinging at
buzzard-sized mosquitos!

Reminds me of all the issues with who built what....
There are about 65 of the original something like 100 Bowlus Road Chiefs ever built, and there were 8 (and two owners without) at the last Tin Can Tourist rally in Milford MI last spring. The historian of the group gave a wonderful presentation.

What I learned:
Bowlus actually was centered on building sailplanes.
Bowlus preceded Airstream, and there was never any business relationship at all.
Bowlus in only related to Airstream by the first Airstream company bought some general tooling (shears and brakes) when Bowlus went bankrupt.
They built five or six models, many had only a single example.
They are about as strange structurally as anybody could conceive.

Unless Great Lakers organize a rally conjoined with TCT there is not much chance we will to another. I was nothing like a GMC rally at all.

The best part was Dan Hershberger. He has a fantastic collection as of truly antique auto-camping gear. All of it was manufactured prior to 1930.

When I was in high school in Michigan I had a friend whose parents owned a small travel trailer. They said it was a predecessor to the Airstream. It wasn't as curved as an Airstream but it was all aluminum and was made in California by a fellow that had worked at at aircraft company that made aluminum airplanes. I say "had" because it turned out that he was building them from aluminum that he took out the back door from the aircraft plant. I don't know how many he built but it was a nicely built travel trailer and was very light to tow. It wasn't a Bowlus.

Has anyone ever stripped the paint from the top portion of he GMC and
polished it like these trailers? I've seen some old aircraft at Oskosh that
were transformed to beautiful and unusual planes, all polished and shiny.
They surely would be almost impossible to maintain in that "shiny" state
without indoor storage and constant maintenance. Watt do you think? Is it
that kind of aluminum?

Yes.

Lance (VanPom ??) from Vancouver, WA had a Palm Beach that had the aluminum sections polished. It also had some thin aluminum added to some of the fiberglass areas. It was "interesting" looking and certainly had possibilities. (Most of the fiberglass was still pale green.) I did not take any pictures the one time I saw it. But I have seen pictures on the net.

I understand he sold it and after a few coach-less years, has bought another Palm Beach.

I do not know where the Polished Palm Beach is currently located.
