G'day,
Does anybody have a lower control arm bushing that's not installed? I need
the:
1. OD of the flange
2. OD of the steel shell
3) Length of the steel shell
I want to make a sleeve (P/N J-21474) to press them into as noted in the MM.

The size of the lower bushing shell is : ID, 1.76/ 1.78
OD. 1.90/1.92
The variance is because of the taper.

Thanks!
I did not ask my question clearly.
I want to be able to press the whole bushing out of the lower control arm;
shell and all, therefore I need the OD of the flange on the end of the
bushing that bottoms up against side of the control arm.

failure to communicate!" ;-)
I want to know the OD of the other end; I need to make a tool that the
bushing will slide into when I push it out. The ID of the tool must be
slightly larger than the flange.

Thanks!
I was lucky and found a Kent Moore J-22222 Bushing Removing Kit on eBay a
couple of years ago. It wasn't cheap but I bought it and used it to R&R the
bushings on The Blue Streak. I used Steve F's urethane lowers and Moog
offset uppers.
Since had already changed the bushings in The Blue Streak when it came time
to change the ones in Double Trouble I did a deal with Steve and he took
what I paid for the kit off the price of a pair of arms and I sent it to
him.
I then got REALLY lucky and found another Kent Moore J-22222 Bushing
Removing Kit and since it was only $30 or so I figger'd what the hell and
bought it. It has everything you need to replace the bushings except for the
J-21474 Sleeve that the lower bushing slides into when you press them out.
It definitely will not work as well as yours as its painted blue!

Rob,
Under just about any circumstances, I can remove and install bushings
quicker without the darn tool. I'm not referring to the urethane bushings
inserted into existing shells. However, I do use a couple pieces from the
tool instead of large sockets so parts of the tool are getting some "hard"
wear.

If you're going to replace the rubber bushings with urethane, Nick at Applied GMX suggested just burning our the old rubber bushings with a torch since you need to leave the metal sleeve in place. I drilled around the first one and then burned it out, but found on subsequent ones that you can just torch them out, drilling doesn't help much. They come out like toasted marshmallows, Yumm!

G'day,
Here's the way I did the control arms in The Blue Streak awhile back and Mr.
Lower Control Arm (Steve F.) has adopted, hence the name of the method.

However, Manny did a few of these recently like the picture and wound up
bending the A-frames. He did explain why he felt that happened but I can't
remember.
In light of the problem Manny ran into I would suggest:
1) Position the plates under the flange of the "lower" control arm bushing
so the steel shell isn't pressed out
2) Run a long 3/8 inch extension down through the center of the "upper"
steel bushing
3) Connect the extension to a socket with an OD that is a bit smaller than
the OD of the "lower" steel center bushing
4) Press out the "lower" steel center bushing
5) Remove the socket from the 3/8 inch extension
6) Connect the 3/8 inch extension to a 1/2 inch drive adapter
7) Connect the 1/2 inch drive adapter to a socket with an OD a bit smaller
than the ID of the rubber bushing
8) Press out the "lower" rubber bushing
9) Turn the control arm over and repeat the process

If you're going to replace the rubber bushings with urethane, Nick at
Applied GMX suggested just burning our the old rubber bushings with a torch
since you need to leave the metal sleeve in place. I drilled around the
first one and then burned it out, but found on subsequent ones that you can
just torch them out, drilling doesn't help much. They come out like toasted
marshmallows, Yumm!
