I found this easy to use wire size and voltage drop calculator for use if rewiring headlights, stereos, and those long battery cable runs. The recent talk about headlight dimming when installing the newer Sylvania Silver Star H6024ST headlights illustrates the need to size the power wire properly as they use 65/55(high/low)watts each. (65/12= 5.4 amps each)
You can see as you add more and more loads(A/C fan, stereo, cab lights, add-on instumentation, compressor, etc)to the system that you can soon approach the output of the alternator.
