I know we have some here who will not like this not truly gmc related email; sorry about that.
It saddens me to email about Scott Adam, 70, and his wife Jean who were two of the victims in this week's pirate incident in the Arabian Sea. Jean was a retired dentist with an interest in biology and Scott had ties to the entertainment industry. They were both radio enthusiasts (K9ESO and KF6RVB) and world travelers who were sailing around the world on their 58-foot yacht on a mission to deliver religious material to exotic locations.
(Bet they would have wished they had a GMC too.)
Their ship was hijacked by Somali pirates last Friday, and they were killed in a shoot-out on Tuesday. You can read more about the circumstances here. There are a lot of questions about the attack. You can read more about the couple and their adventures here.
What really saddens me is that these things are even happening. I am sure you have heard the Marine anthem's "from the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli." Well, while Tripoli is in the news today because of Kadhafi, it is in that song commemorating their involvement in the Barbary wars against pirates of Libya. The Barbary Wars (or Tripolitan Wars) were two wars between the United States of America and the Barbary States of North Africa in the early 19th century. (1801-1805 & 1815) At issue was the Barbary pirates' demand of tribute from American merchant vessels in the Mediterranean Sea. American naval power attacked the pirate cities and extracted concessions of fair passage from their rulers.
These punitive actions against the Barbary States were launched by the administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. When they proved successful, partisans of the Democratic-Republicans (notice the name of the party - learn a little ) contrasted their administrations' refusal to buy off the pirates with the failure of the preceding federalist administration to live up to their rhetoric, "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute,"
Do you think we have any politicians today who will even say such a thing, much less take such actions. We need more men like those, less like what we have.
