Ok everyone,

My wife thinks I am starting to spend to much money to fast on our 73 gmc, I
have to admit the last couple of weeks have been expensive, rebuilding the
rear end and a few other things.
The old shocks are of course totally shot, I need to replace them but do I have to get the high end? These can always be upgraded later, it would be nice to get it running and on the road before I go broke. Any suggestion for less expensive shocks that will work for now?

As far as I know there are only two manufacturers of shocks for our coaches. Jim Kanomata handles both brands.

1 -- Short of replacement, I am not sure how you would "upgrade" shocks. So you should buy what you are going to use.

2. -- Our rear shocks actually work "backwards" to most shocks. When the suspension is compressed the shocks extend rather than compress in "normal" applications.

Now that I have given reasons for the shocks to be expensive, look at JimK's KYB's: <http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/699>

The KYB's are comparitable to "normal" shocks in price and work the best on our coaches even when compaired to the more expensive Bilstein Shocks. (Many have had issues with Bilstein.) I have Bilsteins on one coach and KYB's on the other two. For a GMC, I would not pay "any amount" for any shock other than the KYB.

Bottom line: If you need shocks, get KYB's from one of the Jims.

Buying cheap parts is like buying cheap tools.
Sooner or later you'll get the good ones.

There are but 2 suppliers that can be considered and provento be worthwhile.
KYB and Bilstine.
There was one that lookes big and mighty, but the guy denied to make
the defective ones good and left lot of people out in the cold.

The Bilstiens are well touted (except for the odd high failure rates on our coaches), and they ride really nice. I've had them on an S15, a K1500 and on my GMC and in all cases found them to ride well, but always just a bit too soft. For my money I'd go KYB next time and pocket the rest of the money and be sure that the warranty was good as well.

Serge,

Since you have a 73 coach you should be aware that there may be some interference when you fit the new shocks..

see this photo by Kelvin and others related in the album

Jim,
I don't exactly know what you are referring to when you offer help and what
ever type of help you are talking about I appreciate, there were some times
in our life that were really tough and I was not to proud to ask for help
but this is a new project a HobbyCraft so this is not a necessity , just
something for fun and I will have to pace myself a little bit better. My
wife was right and if I can do this project and keep Mama happy at the same
time, then everybody will be happy.

Thanks again

Serge

Hi Jim,

With all do respect and appreciation, I thank you and yes they are KYB but
they were never purchased from you or by me and I can not accept your offer
as generous as it is. I will work this out.
